The dulcimer drone of DAA? The drone of the two propellers inadvertently tuned the same? I catch visual art going on in Joni's songs. Seeing the sound so to speak. Drone is such an interesting concept. I always think of the drone bees. Then I think of Sue showing me what a drone string is in tuning a guitar. Then you Steve explaining the dulcimer tuning to me high up at Pete and Leslie's in Topanga Canyon. I get a buzz just thinking about it. Even if I'm not an aviation geek as such, there are so many evocative images (visual, sonic and maybe more) that Joni has used that resonated with me from the start. I love the line from "Man from Mars' that goes "I hear you in the water and the wiring in the walls" because as a child I used to think I could *hear* electricity (but I really think it was the sound of cicadas that made me think the wires were humming). Yes, Joni has put herself out there, which reminds me of a comment somebody famous made after they heard her album Blue...like 'keep something for yourself Joni.' We put ourselves out here too on this list, but we only really have a glimpse of each other given the distance between us and the infrequency of our get togethers. Facebook does help with a better glimpse sometimes. And truly each of us is in a constant state of flux, change, so all we really have of each other and of Joni are "guesses based on what each set it time and change are touching." Even our bones are completely different bone every 15 years or so. We are "particles of change" and that any of us is, is a miracle. I'm grateful to be dancing in the same instance of time as Joni. I wouldn't notice it without the fact that, "I feel like I'm losing mine. Somewhere out here on this horizon line with the earth spinning and the sky forever rushing." What else can I be but in awe of the beautiful, and Joni is a beautiful person. The "Depth" clipping on YouTube I posted last reminded me of the first glimpse I caught of Joni as she arrived at the Ruby Lake Resort... she looked thin, tall, and full of energy as she bounced in beside the Cosgrossi's. It is wonderful to "live and let live." And it is fun to imagine being friends with Joni. If I was, I'd ask her to show me how to paint. I don't see that having anything to do with her as a person except for the fact that I respect her talent, her artistic soul, and her courage. The video that Laura just posted about her depth is a perfect example. She was not bound to people in her life if her art brought her somewhere else; described so acutely in one of her first songs ... But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads They say I've changed But something's lost, and something's gained In living every day I don't care if Joni knows me, I do care that knowing her art has changed my life. To address this question, I vote cocaine. It fits with the culture - the Kingpin idea. I knew a lot of Kingpins & they were all into cocaine. Women he has taken grow old too soon He tilts their tired faces Gently to the spoon ... I'd say cocaine.
