I have been ingesting this album for over a week now. At first I was shocked ... then I was mesmerized, and now I'm enthralled. I have to say I felt like a rube at first because I wasn't getting it ... but it's a challenge and a joy to listen to this music. I blame my own blind immersion in Joni's music. I found myself eventually listening to different levels, the voice first, then the drums, then the horns. I agree with the reviewer that there are sections where the drumming excels, kudos to Mr. Lewis. Plus I've never read such amazingly well written reviews in my life. Laurie, you are not only blessed with amazing talent, and surrounded by amazing musicians, but your reviewers also have an excellent handle on the English language. I guess jazz raises the playing field on all levels!! I know it's definitely raised mine! Right now my favorite tracks are Eastern Rain and Woman of Heart and Mind. Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire is phenomenal, too. What a great achievement. Congratulations Laurie!! "Ms. Mitchell has made it her business to write wickedly difficult chord changes to suit her wickedly difficult melodies. Her lyrics are written in the vers libre, without rhyme, but full of inner rhymes and rhythms. Her guitar is tuned differently. She plays in odd metres on a shifting rhythmic base. And that is only part of it. But two attempts to make Joni Mitchell's music anew have been hugely successful. The first is Herbie Hancock's partly instrumental one, River: The Joni Letters and now the amazing recording by the ineffable Laurie Antonioli - Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light. It was linked to my Facebook profile, and now I will fully embrace this name which was chosen with only aesthetic considerations in-mind. So please try to make the shift and call me Peta-Bana, as my destiny is now intertwined with this name, and I hope will be shaped by it, as the name will acquire my characteristics, I predict. So, yes, it makes sense that the Ruby Lake Jonifest will only take place on 1 July 2016, so that all can anticipate it and all arrive there on the day. By that time what-'s-name will have caught wind of it as well, and probably come sailing there through the blue. Much love to all Peta-Bana ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2014 18:02:41 -0500 From: Jack Merkel Subject: Re: Another glowing review... I would argue that at least three "attempts to make Joni Mitchell's music anew have been hugely successful". Let's not forget the amazing "Safaris To The Heart" by the incomparable Robin Adler and her Mutts of The Planet (which in my opinion the strongest of the three by a long shot)!
