Bob NP: Tori Amos, "Unrepentant Geraldines" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2014 09:43:52 +0200 From: Oddmund Kaarevik Subject: Jonifests are quite fun without Joni I don't see it at realistic at all that Joni would attend a Joni fest. I wouldn't either if I was her. I feel it would be the same feeling like being Jesus or something - with hundreds to feed. And you can say many things about Joni, but she is not Jesus. We like Joni. I personally think her music is some of the most brilliant stuff ever made. But I don't know her. And I'm not even sure if I like her, as a person. She strikes me as quite harsh and negative, quite often. Towards so many things and people around her in the world. When that is said - I kind of like that too. In some interview she said told about when she learn what happens when you tell the truth. // taken from interview with Mojo 2008 / pasted from Les Irvin's fantastic website (http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=1834&from=search) Mojo: You mention truth a lot when talking about your music. Can you look back to see where truth became an important quality for you? Joni: I was a little girl at church and the minister told this this sermon, I think it was his first one at our church. The minister before was very safe and non-political and uninspiring. The new minister chose "Thou shalt not steal" as his first sermon. There had been this story around town about a woman who was collecting for charity and some of the money disappeared. The rumour went around that she took it and even though no one ever proved she took it, people started treating her differently. It was like this lynch mob. Into that climate came this new minister and he started his sermon with the normal interpretation of "Thou shalt not steal" and it was pretty boring. But all of a sudden, he says there are other ways you can steal besides stealing material things. He said you can steal a person's reputation and the congregation began to cough and squirm, really irritable like he hit a nerve. I was delighted, but the end of the story is next week half the congregation stayed home. Mojo: What did you learn from that? Joni: I learned that tell the truth and you'll have half a house, but that it's worth it. // Now, I do know that some of you have met her. Because of several reasons. Some of you have done her great favours that I guess she felt had to be repaid in at least a personal meeting. Some of you have met her these rare occasions were she invites a handful of random, but loyal fans. Some part of me would also like to meet her. I guess when someone have given us something - we would like to give something in return. At least say "thank you." And I hear she is often very graceful in those situations. Which is nice to hear. But if there is one thing to say about Joni Mitchell - than there is that she is not compromising. She does everything. Her way. Always. And so - I am afraid Dave Blackburn is right. Don't hold your breath for Joni. But is Joni really that important for a Jonifest? Isn't it much more fun to meet up with fun Joni fans. And sing tunes together. And listen to great singers of Joni tunes. I promise you the atmosphere would be far more relaxed without Joni there. And enjoyable. That's just my take. And I am not saying this to insult anyone. So I hope you're not insulted. Because that is not my case at all. And I am not going further into personal discussions about this - if that is the case- If anybody is insulted I offer my apologies. I just wanted to say this. It is just my personak take. My norwegian take. I am not american. I am not canadian. And maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Joni has come to a stage in her life where she loves to meet her fans. I am sure she appreciate us- at some level, like all artist do. At least that is my my hope. My grandiose thinking always gets me in trouble, but I think it would be worth a try to finally invite Joni to a Jonifest, and it would be a good idea to make the venue either LA or BC, to make it easier for her. I've often thought it would be fun to transcribe these moments and preserve them on the website. Here's the first example: read her long intro to "Come To The Sunshine" from November of 1966: http://jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=276 (below the lyrics) If anyone has transcribed any of these moments (Kakki did the arbutus tree thing years ago, no?) please send them to me (referencing dates and other necessary info) and I'll put them online. Thanks!
