I am with Michael on both Barangrill and Eastern Rain. Barangrill seems to lend itself so well to Laurie and her musician's arrangement. The flutes and clarinets with her scatting at the end is just so good and the messing around and additions to Joni's original riff work really well. I will go as far as saying I like Laurie's Barangrill BETTER than Joni's original. Laurie's eggs over easy are a particular triumph! What I particularly liked about 'Eastern Rain' was the vocal mix at the beginning - very warm against the (reverbed hand?) drums and there are some great touches. The 7/8 (I think it is) rhythm with some stylish eastern vocal flourishes bring something so fresh to the song. Brilliant. There is so much to enjoy here - I wasn't quite so taken, as you were Paz, with WOHM, but CBS&SF is chilling. Lauries timing on the chorus.... 'Come with me' and 'Down the Dark Ladder' fairly froze me. I remember a similar experience watching Susan Guzzi singing CBS&SF at Joni Fest in 2003, when I felt on a similar knife edge. I also really like 'This Flight Tonight' - what a great groove! Neat drums, heavy piano and in Laurie launches and when the chorus comes in that she shouldn't have got on this flight 'TONIGHHHHHHHt'. I loved it. Even the much covered 'California' is given a super swing. 'Californ YA' . I bought it that Laurie was coming home. I have never been a great jazz afficiando, but I had a jazz loving friend who, if he liked something he would say 'Man, that is fat!' Thank you so much. It really means so much coming from this group. I know how much you value Joni and her music - as do I - and it's an honor to be recognized in such a sincere and heartfelt fashion!! There was definitely some risk involved making a record like this. However, we did a number of concerts prior to going in the studio and it was clear that people really wanted to hear this music. We saw lots of new faces in the audience just because we were doing Joni's music. She is deeply loved and that came through. Taking on Joni meant taking on recent history and an iconic legacy that I respect tremendously. I didn't know if I could, or should or would be able to pull this off. The truth is, the power and ease with which these songs came together made it clear we had to go forward. The band loved it - and we found our voice. It all made sense. I did produce it, as Bob said. After we recorded, the band went home and I sat with editing, mixing and mastering engineers for countless hours. That part takes months. Some of this took place on the East Coast. I have an "A" team of engineers that I like to work with and they know my voice. I'm completely happy with the sonics of the record (well, there is this one place on that one song...hah - we're never completely happy!) But all to say - it takes really skillful people to work on sound and make it beautiful. Beauty is something in short supply these days and this record had to be beautiful *sounding *or it wasn't going to work! I love this project. But it's also really nice to know that others are enjoying the music. This is a great reward. You made my day, my week, my month. As well, I appreciate everyone's input on "favorite songs" and am thrilled that it seems to be all different songs. Even the critics are finding different songs to focus on. So - this is good. I love hearing about this! The record is not officially released for another 3 weeks (Aug. 19) - the radio stations will get copies this week. You, the Joni fans and the people who donated to the Indiegogo campaign are in on this as it's getting ready to go out into the world. I hope to meet some of you in person some time and invite you to come to the CD Release concert in San Francisco on Sept. 28 if you can make it. SF is a wonderful city and September is THE time to visit. I think it might be about time to watch the Ghomeshi interview again!!! But look up the Q magazine interview from 88 and it mentions being a clothes horse for a department store saving money for the union dues. I'm thinking she was keeping the reasons different to still hide the pregnancy (even though this was the British press). As for the dues issue, she usually tells that story when she is talking about giving Kilauren up for adoption. I think she mentioned that in the Jian Ghomeshi interview last year, too. It was only when Fred Walecki made the lighter Parker Fly that she toured. As for the other query... I understood that she was too poor to scrape together the dues too... I knew she'd worked there from an older interview from 1988 I believe... But maybe the trains she tells interviewers in 1988 is different to what she tells them in 1998... She worked as a salesgirl in a Toronto Simpsons-Sears department store until she scraped together the $140 to join the musicians' union. (I was under the impression that she was even too broke (and also pregnant) to afford the union dues ... did she eventually pay the dues?) Sorry to nitpick! Currently #32 on the list with (25) recordings. Only "My Old Man" and "Last Time I Saw Richard" have been covered less of all of the songs from Blue. Methinks that most singers are challenged by those high notes. It did get a recent boost with all of the 40th Anniversary of Blue tribute CD's.
