As for the dues issue, she usually tells that story when she is talking about giving Kilauren up for adoption. I think she mentioned that in the Jian Ghomeshi interview last year, too. It was only when Fred Walecki made the lighter Parker Fly that she toured. As for the other query... I understood that she was too poor to scrape together the dues too... I knew she'd worked there from an older interview from 1988 I believe... But maybe the trains she tells interviewers in 1988 is different to what she tells them in 1998... She worked as a salesgirl in a Toronto Simpsons-Sears department store until she scraped together the $140 to join the musicians' union. (I was under the impression that she was even too broke (and also pregnant) to afford the union dues ... did she eventually pay the dues?) Sorry to nitpick! And I'm late on this thread too ... was happily away at beach vacation in NC! My skin turned brown and I came home! :) Sue Susan Tierney McNamara email: sem8@cornell.edu> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2014 19:32:02 -0700 From: kbhla@fastmail.fm Subject: Re: The Wolf that Lives in Lindsey Hi Dave, I really fell in love with this song when I heard Marian's incredible rendition of it at an early Jonifest and it has always intrigued me, too. I don't know who it is but have a real out there idea of whom it might be. Someone who is very well-loved and regarded, so I don't want to speculate. I like to think the lyrics, which could fit him, are full of metaphor. He doesn't really get away with murder in the literal sense, and he is not a real criminal, but rather a very free spirit who, through lots of kismet and serendipity, has always made his way and name through the whole scene. The cold case of L.A.'s most notorious serial murderer in the 70s was not cracked until 2009 when the perp was finally identified and convicted, but don't know of a cocaine connection with him. I think the many references to "snow" could mean coke, which was unfortunately flowing profusely in L.A. in the late '70s. Could be a rich drug dealer associated with a cartel/drug mafia who got people bumped off and never got caught. Anything is possible in the dark recesses of the big city and Joni may have known of, or heard stories about, a particular character like that. I wouldn't be surprised.
