Our friend Lynn Skinner kicks things off with a jazzed up rarely done "Same Situation". Tracks 2-5 are from Big Yellow Taxi, but not the Henning-Christina band. It's a German quintet of the same name who recorded an album of Joni and Beatles covers. Also very nice. JoJo is an American R&B artist and changed the song title to "White Girl In Paris". Jengis combines the pseudo-metal with a little funk in their take on "This Flight Tonight". Another lovely Swedish-language song by Irma Schultz. Nearly all of these are from 2012/2013, nothing older than 2006. https://www.yousendit.com/download/ZUczeEVYT2J3TGk1aWNUQw 1. Lynn Skinner - Same Situation 2. Big Yellow Taxi - Help Me 3. That song God must be a boogie man seems to depict a gang rape by three men, and I saw a drawing/painting accompanying this song once (somewhere ?), and it seems like the first was a black musician, the second a ruthless, unmoved indian with red hair, and the third someone looking like a businessman....and she says 'the heat is three'.....And then, which one does G_d want the world to see.....And then boogie also means 'strong rhythmic rock', which Joni seemed inspired to after this whole mess of Mingus.... I don't think it's a case of golden factories but rather of ruthlessness and cruelty (since Joni sings that every shadow also has a source of light): so mingus 2 is what I would think, but mingus 1 would have been better than mingus 2 or 3. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2014 19:58:52 +0100 From: Anita Gabrielle Subject: Re: Joni listed at UK Festival, Glastonbury Called Fantasy Festival and chosen live on BBC by Ed, the drummer from Metallica, singer from Kaiser Chiefs and someone else, Joni would line up with The Clash, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. In the beginning of the book, Mingus recreates a session with his psychiatrist where he describes himself as having three distinct personalities. In the song, one personality is 'in the middle unmoved waiting to show what he sees to the other two', a kind of passive, neutral observer who sees clearly how the other two aspects work to affect the man's life and way of thinking. The second personality that is described is manifested by fear. It's like Joni's lyric in 'Come In From the Cold' - 'we get hurt and we just panic and we strike out out of fear'. The third is the trusting, loving side that makes itself vulnerable and open to the hurt and betrayals that bring out the fear and defensiveness of the second personality. If you can access Amazon's US site, you can look inside 'Beneath the Underdog' here: http://www.amazon.com/Beneath-Underdog-World-Composed-Mingus/dp/0679737618 That's how I see the song. I honestly don't think it has anything to do with rape. Where I have used Joni Mitchell is for dancing with scarves to songs such as Help Me, Free Man in Paris, etc...any song with a good beat typically works. I also use a lot of Stevie Wonder, India Arie, all kinds of stuff. I'm thinking of maybe doing a month that focuses on women in music and Joni Mitchell will definitely be included. I might play a Joni Mitchell song and have the kids play rhythm instruments along with me. And of course have them listen to some of her recordings. They idea is to just expose them to all kind of music, reggae, rock, jazz, classical, traditional, gypsy, New Orleans (hi Paz), and more. Currently though, I am totally focused on packing up, moving, finding house, coordinating a farewell performance, so many things to do...
