I always like reading about the early Joni experiences of list members. I don't think I'd really ever likened Joni's evolving voice to that of Marianne Faithful. I think it's a good comparison. I would have thought more of Stevie Nicks. Her voice has roughened over the years too but it seems to me that she hasn't lost add much. That may not be fair a comment as both JM and MF have worked with the changes and put our great work they couldn't have put out earlier (broken english MF's late sixties vocal style anyone? ). My first Joni album was Hits which I got a couple of years after it was released. I loved it by the end of the first track. I had known Chelsea Morning for years as my dad had had it on a tape he had made from his brother's records. He had mislabelled the singer as Janis Joplin. In searching out Chelsea Morning I became a Janis fan. My dad's tape had long been lost so I became convinced that my memory of the song was inaccurate. A friend I had not seem for years sent me a gift voucher for a music shop unexpectedly. I was browsing and liked the cover of Hits. Just like you said Jamie, discovering Joni really set a high standard in what I considered to be great music. A lot of the music I had listened to as a teenager suddenly seemed less powerful, less genuine, and less interesting. As far as I can recall I then started buying other Joni albums that were represented on Hits. I joined JMDL in 1999 I think. BSN was on the horizon. I got caught up in the excitement here. I was still discovering Joni albums and beginning to get my head around her progression as an artist. I had just gone to university and my friends thought my new infatuation was mad. I really like Night Of The Iguana and really like your comments about it. Garret On 9 May 2014 12:41, "Jamie Zubairi Home" wrote: > I'm loving this discussion! She was probably unable to stop her creativity, and because of the fact she could only be true to herself and not be as careful of sensible in the way that us mere mortals can be in our interactions with others, so she ended up with more complications in life than most of us would face. Even really sensible stars like Paul McCartney can make terrible life decisions. So everyday I thank God I only have minimal talent. Yes, every album has a few gems. It's just that there are like 12 or 15 really good records ranked above the bad ones. Yes, I just like the way she sings. Perhaps because I heard her voice more than my mother's while my brain formed. I will listen to early stuff, recent stuff, her own songs, standards, pop covers, etc. I don't care. It comforts me. For other people, it grates, and they can only listen to the Judy Collins or CSNY covers. No, because she is a fantastic guitarist who works with other great musicians, yet this is not highlighted on her lesser later work. No, there is a wide world of music out there. A lot of it is amazing, and it's easier than ever to find a niche if Top 40 isn't what you like. That's my 95 cents. I think I'm up to $4.23 in total. I came up with four 'must-haves' for the CD. Then, I thought it would be fun to have everyone else chime in. So, to kick this off, my suggestions are: "Hollow" by Brian Kennedy"Gabriel" by Ronee Blakely"Nothing to Do" by Karen Farr"Flicker and Fail" by Laura Marling What else comes to mind? Do you think these are Joni-like? lots of love,Anne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 May 2014 21:25:53 +0000 From: "Susan E.
