If I understand the album title correctly, that is what Joni intended. Anyway, shouldn't an album titled Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm have been recorded only on the acetate that Jim Phelps, Mission: Impossible's team leader, heard his next assignment on (should he chose to accept it) before it self-destructed? I haven't listened to much Joni lately. But we went to see Tom Rush at a member concert for WUMB last weekend. (We were in the 8th row!) He told how he came upon certain songs and said that all those years ago Joni sent him a tape of about a half dozen new songs, with an apology for the last song on the tape, saying it wasn't very good. It was The Circle Game. I had tears in my eyes when he did it. His encore was Urge for Going. I wonder if there are even other gems out there of Joni's that we've never heard. I'll bet there are. Most songwriters have songs and even song fragments that they just don't favor. In some cases (like Jackson Brown's "These Days") others complete the fragment for them. Or (even in my case) I'm not terribly fond of a song of mine called "Love is Loud" but it was recognized recently in a songwriting contest. It's just so hard sometimes to hear your work as others do. As for PoP - I always thought it was something of an intellectual exercise for her. I like it, but have never considered covering it because it lacks a certain amount of heart for me. Yet the melody is interesting, treading into unusual intervals without being dissonant. lots of love,Anne ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2014 #144 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here:mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
