I was in the audience that day at the Ed Sullivan Theatre. The show had its ups and downs. There was a pretty disgusting discussion about Lyme disease and deer ticks. The way the show is edited prior to broadcast, the length of the commercial break prior to the performance is due to the amount of time it takes to set up the stage which for that large an orchestra TOOK FOR-EV-ER. During the interview afterwards, Letterman asked her, "Who's paying for all that?" I sensed a little awkward moment where both Joni and Dave didn't know the answer and both chirped something like, "God Bless the record company!" This was Joni's last (to this date) performance on The Late Show. Let's also remember that a few years later she had some harsh words for Letterman with regards to his treatment of musicians, "He's the worst, he treats musicians like second class citizens" or something like that. Maybe the green room was a little crowded or craft service was shy for 35+ pieces of orchestra?
