I love what she says about trying to sing the Joni Mingus songs. Really great singers can maneuver those intervals but they're not easy. In a similar light, I was listening this AM to a really nice new cover of Hissing of Summer Lawns and just really love that scat middle that Joni does, before she sings "Diamond Dog...". It's easy for another singer to duplicate it, but for Joni's inside ear to have heard that in the first place speaks to her jazz sensibilities, I think. John Guerin wrote some sultry changes for that tune. It has a very late 60s/early 70s movie score quality, that would have been pastiche even by 1975.
