I had to come out of lurkdom for THIS thread. I've found it very interesting to see the diverse group of people everyone has selected so far too either be second-in-line to their love for Joni - or ahead of her, in their eyes (and ears). Regarding some of the other peoples' choices: I've never really "gotten" Leonard Cohen but maybe it's because I haven't heard a wide enough cross section of his work. And, while I think Tom Waits is a genius, his body of work has just been too uneven for my taste (love some, hate most). As for my selections: Todd Rundgren has always been tied with Joni for my love of their life's accomplishments in music; close behind are Stephen Stills (especially with Manassas), Joe Walsh, Laura Nyro, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, Joe Jackson, Flo and Eddie, and Leon Russell (for a top ten, I guess). These people all have stood my test of time and I still enjoy their music today. Of course, I enjoy many newer musicians and groups as well, people like Michael Penn, Aimee Mann, Avril Lavigne, Adele, Chris Smither (who I'm going to see live next weekend in Beacon, NY), and groups like Wilco, Son Volt, and Fountains of Wayne. I must admit to liking some of the newer "alternative music" played on college radio stations today but it all sounds the same after a while; one group is much like the next.
