Maybe he couldn't play an instrument, but he could in his head. Dang, wish he was still alive and making music. If you have a minute, check this out and get your week started on the right foot! For me, Tom Waits is right up there with Joni. Also love Ben Folds, Gerry Rafferty, Tori Amos and The Boss. So difficult to select an overall favourite. Objectively (since when is musical taste EVER objective!), I would say that for the combination of wonderful poetry and tunes that take some time to work their magic (and are all the better for that), it's probably Joni and Tom tied at the top. Jonathan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2014 08:22:14 -0700 From: Betsy Blue Subject: Second in line I don't obsess about anyone the way I do with Joni. I can't afford the time or money. The Beatles would probably be my second in line, if that's not cheating. I listen to a lot of women: Tori, Missy Elliot, Pink, Rhianna, Fiona, Ellie Goulding, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald. Male artists I love include Neil Young, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Eminem, Tom Petty, Jay-Z, Prince, and David Byrne. Joni is directly responsible for making me a fan of Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Brian Blade, Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, Cassandra Wilson, Glen Hansard, Seal, Chaka Khan, and Aimee Mann. Maybe some day I will check out this Bruce Springsteen guy. I know of a couple of his songs. I have heard the name Tom Waits, but I have no idea what he's about. But I trust you guys after learning about Laura Nyro. Bob Dylan, though...I do not get what people like about him. Hi Jeff, If this is measured by numbers of albums and song books owned, hours spent playing and singing the artist's songs, documentaries watched, friends made, miles traveled and time and dollars spent at fests and other gatherings centered around sharing joy of the artist's work then no other female or male singer/song writer even comes close to Joni for me. If it is measured by what goes into my CD player, I guess Judy Collins tied with Laura Nyro would be second in line.
