Jim, I have pondered that myself. As far as I know, once she started working with Henry Lewy, they always recorded at A&M (now called Henson) until she met Klein and they built The Kiva studio in their home in Malibu. A&M had, I think, three studios within it, so its possible that FTR and C&S were recorded on different consoles, but my reading indicates that Henry always recorded her with a standard Neumann U87 into the custom made Haeco console's preamps. The albums with mid-range-y and slightly harsh vocals are C&S, THOSL and DJRD, whereas FTR, Hejira, Blue and Mingus dont. I have assumed that perhaps the albums with possible singles more likely to get airplay were mixed with more mids and less top and bottom (like early Beatles records) so as to sound good on transistor radios and on average systems (they do - if Help Me comes on the radio in the supermarket today, it sounds fantastic) In hi-fi terms, Blue and FTR are softer on the ear and rounder in tone; more intimate. Maybe Joni asked for that, maybe Henry instinctively went for that. Maybe it was a compressor/eq combination that put her voice out front over the louder kind of rhythm track that the L.A Express played, which was not needed on the albums with mellower instrumentation. Thats very possible. Theres a web forum called gearslutz.com where all these recording techie things are discussed and there have been postings about Jonis recordings and about the A&M studios themselves. Mingus sounds better than any of the others. I wonder why. Some day, maybe Joel Bernstein will fill in some of these blanks. I wonder of Ms. Lewy has answers. Was Henry a note taker?
