I seldom post to the list nowadays. But since you wrote this kind of open letter I thought I could answer it, too. I have been a part of the list I think since 2004. I have learned quite a lot. There are so many people here, who have great knowledge about Joni Mitchell. And they are happy to share things they know. JoniMitchell.com is a fantastic website, run by Les Irivin. I think it is one my favorite websites because it contains so much information. Also this discussion list is good, because it brings out all kind of relevant, update Joni-information. I work as a children's librarian. And I discovered Joni Mitchell, I think in 1999. In many ways she changed my life. And I think I have developed my taste of music trough her, in a weird way. I don't play any instruments good unfortunately. Many people on the list are great musicians. Dave Blackburn and Robin Adler are two of them. They have recently held concerts were they perform all of the Hejira album. Blue will always be the album closest to my heart, because it was the first one I discovered. But I also like the old, rusty Joni, as in her version of Both sides, now from 2000. Never get tired of that. Sometimes the tempature gets high here on the list. But people are mostly forgiving. I am sure that if you chose to hang around, you will find friends here. All the best. The dulcimer was enticing. Nice to meet you, and thank you and others who have made me feel welcomed. Hi Trish, You sound cool. Welcome to the JMDL! I've become somewhat of a lurker because I have two very demanding jobs. I stumbled upon this list in 2002 and have met people at music get togethers we call Jonifest as well as at other smaller and larger events. I like the dulcimer too. Steve Dulson on this list plays it very good. He let me play his at a gathering at Leslie and Pete's in Topanga Canyon, California and shortly after that I bought one. Joni plays it different than I'd heard and I really love the instrument. Do you play? Criticize Joni? Sure thing, after all turnabout is fair play. I'm not much of a folk music type fan, so I was not very interested in the early Joni when I first heard it. Court & Spark was the first thing that caught my ear and I've been onboard ever since, although like a lot of her fans I took a bye on Mingus. I've since learned to appreciate all of her work, though I have my favorites (Hejira) and those I don't like so much (Chalk Mark). I've been on the JMDL since 1998 which is the same year I first saw Joni perform (in Atlanta in November of that year). Due to some good luck we had a chance to meet her that night, exchange some words and photos. Quite a memorable night! I love a good party and have been to lots of Joni-related gatherings around the world. Around 2000 or so I started trying to collect and document all the recordings of Joni covers and that project is still going strong. Every Saturday I roll up a CD's worth of recordings and send them out to whoever wants to download and process the zip file. As for the personal stuff, I live in Greenville, South Carolina, married for 30 years to a very tolerant lady who doesn't complain that she is subjected to lots of things Joni (she's not a fan). Other favorite artists include Tom Waits, Bruce Springsteen, Ani Difranco, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, a long list actually and I'm always looking for what's new. And I also enjoy getting out and enjoying nature, whether it's a run through the park or a hike in the nearby mountains. 'All these vain promises on beauty jars, oh somewhere with your wings on time you must be laughing'. At the risk of being labeled a fawning Joni acolyte, I don't think she has or ever would have 'work done'. Yeah, she will on occasion glam up and appear at high-profile events every now and then. But in the end I don't think she gives much of a s**t about what she's going to look like when the paparazzi pull the cameras out. She's human. She's not without faults. But I just don't think she's going to let some cosmetic surgeon mess with her face. Maybe I'm all wet, but I think she probably regards those lines and sags as emblems of experience and dare I say wisdom? that she has earned. Some days you don't feel like focusing on your appearance. Other days, your super rich friend (frenemy?) holds a party for the most successful musicians in the world, so you get professional hair and makeup, put on a designer gown, and have your picture taken by a great photographer. Ok, maybe that's just Joni and her echelon. Still, overhead lighting is a bitch and being near mature beauties like Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda, and Lauren Hutton can't be easy.
