I was just listening to Here's to you off ttt. I was recently watching her interview with Harry Smith, when he says at one time or another you have saved our life. All this stuff wasn't available before. The other night I dreamt that I was riding my bike listening to For the Roses on a cassette. And Barangrill was done as an instrumental, slower, with a sort of slack key feel to it. It was always one of my favorite songs of hers. It reminded me of when she put the instrumental version of the song Taming the Tiger as a coda at the end of that album. I thought Barangrill has a great essence to it, just in terms of the melody and sounds. I'm trying to say that Joni's stuff is complicated. That's why all those jazz cats like Miles and Mingus were into her. "If" they make this movie which is a joke, they are going to depict her as the woodstock girl and concentrate the 60's, early 70's too much and talk publicly about her daughter issue, which is wrong and nobody's business. If she dosen't want this movie made, it shouldn't be made. That movie about Billie Holiday was obviously made after Billie Holiday died, so she had no say in it. Similarly, La Vie en Rose was made after Edith Piaf died, so she had no say in it. Joni dosen't want her substantial, important body of work reduced to a 70's singer songwriter, who may or may not have slept with Warren Beatty. She never wanted a "box-set" or a hits collection, because her albums are too important and substantial. She dosen't have to put out this autobiography, unless she did indeed sign a contract, but even then she could say, I don't feel like writing it anymore, I guess, but I'm not a lawyer. Well, enough for now, off to the ballet. On , Jeff Clark wrote: is it you? On Thursday, February 20, 2014 10:17 AM, Susan E. Although it is not definitive, IMDB has no confirmation of it. Since this story first broke, I have flip-flopped on whether it is a good idea. I have listened to Swift's songs and wondered what a Joni Mitchell would be like in the paparazzi, TMZ, 24-hour-news-cycle, auto-tune world of today. There are off-putting aspects to the Taylor Swift machine but some of her songs are... ok. But more importantly, I want young people to know Joni Mitchell. I want people to know her journey, her courage, her evolution as an artist and musician. When I first listened to Joni, I also listened to Laura Nyro, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Judy Collins. Other than Judy, do you think young people know the others? Taylor Swift may or may not be good as a young Joni Mitchell. But what she will do is introduce millions of young listeners to the poetry and music of Joni Mitchell. I'm for that. That being said, I don't believe the report. Joni indicated that she stopped the movie in her Toronto interview. And, while she is a historical figure, someone would need to approve the use of her music in the movie. If Joni was opposed to the film and stopped the use of her music, that would be a killer. Witness the recent Justin Long movie, "A Case of You", which couldn't get rights to the song that inspired the title. Further, Taylor Swift - after trying to mimic the Joni Mitchell look - has recently cut her hair. (That probably revealed that I read too much about Swift.) Best wishes to all. Also, I'm in the camp that doesnbt' want to see this movie made at all. Joni's legacy is not going to go away. Bob's covers project is proof of that. Musicians will keep her music alive. Mutts of the Planet are doing amazing work of maintaining a high standard of quality in their live and recorded performances, preserving the music but pushing it forward with their own special, individual contributions. Over time, people who love quality music and who have inquisitive minds will discover it and new audiences will develop over successive generations. I don't think Joni needs or wants what might be a botched biopic to sell her catalogue. Somebody mentioned Sissy Spacek and 'Coal Miner's Daughter'. To my mind, that is the gold standard for biopics about singers. Spacek was able to assume Loretta Lynn's character and created a remarkable facsimile of Loretta's singing voice. That said, if I had to choose an actress to play the young Joni Mitchell, I really don't know who it might be. Jessica Chastain came to mind but when I looked her name up on the IMDB, it said she was born in 1977. So she is in her late 30s now. Still, a good actress with the right look can do amazing things with a character that is not necessarily close to their age. I don't know if she can sing. Jennifer Lawrence is a hot ticket right now and closer to the right age. Not much resemblance to Joni, though, and again, there is the question of whether or not she can sing. And to be quite honest, I haven't seen any of her films. If there has to be a film about Joni Mitchell, Joni deserves to have someone who has the highest quality of skills to act the part, not an untried pop sensation who may bear some resemblance and maybe has a sincere admiration for Joni.
