When I came into play all I had to listen to was Jonibs acoustic guitar and her vocal, and she just had me go out into the studio and react to the music. She gave me no direction, there was no time ahead of time to learn the songs b thatbs never the way webve done our sessions b we come in fresh and we react to the tunes on the spot. On that record [Joni] had me play three, four, maybe five [takes] of reaction guitar, and then that would be the end of it. I would leave and she would later choose and pick which of my reactions she really wanted and agreed with on that song, and I think she did a great job of editing my parts, they fit like a glove on her tunes.b" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2014 21:17:56 +0100 From: Moni Kellermann Subject: US-only: Win Joni print by donating to Dem PAC https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/joni On Alan Grayson: "For as long as we've known him, he's been a relentless evangelist on behalf of the songs of Joni Mitchell. And he knows every single one of them. When he saw that Blue America had 4 Joni Mitchell prints (18" x 24") from art work she did for Reprise, he asked if we would give them away to his supporters. That's what this little contest is about. Just make a contribution to Alan on this page-- any amount-- and you can be one of the 4 lucky winners to get a rare, collectible print. In fact, if you're strapped for cash and want a chance, just send a postcard to Blue America at P.O. Box 27201, Los Angeles, CA 90027 and you'll get a chance to win too." To participate, you must be a United States citizen or a permanent resident alien, and you must be > 18 yrs. There is no further description of those prints but hey, if you vote Democrat anyway, giving a buck or two to the campaigns of Alan Grayson (FL-09) or Lee Rogers (CA-25) may be an easy way to grab one of those items... moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Feb 2014 19:26:49 -0800 From: Rick Hobbs-Seeley Subject: Re: Joni Book in the mail #39 17 Sent from my iPhone On Feb 10, 2014, at 6:51 PM, "Cassy" wrote: Mine is #33 Cassy - -----Original Message----- From: Michael Paz Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2014 10:59 PM To: jonipeople LIST Subject: Joni Book in the mail #39 Came home to a lovely present in the mail tonight after a great evening with Jack DeJohnette, Esperanza Spaulding, Joe Lavano, Leo Genovese (Spring Quartet) and Christiant Scott Quintet and Helen Gillet. Not a bar chord in sight - simple D and E min shapes that made sense to me. Yet put together in that tuning and it turns into a sequence of notes that is orchestral and melodic. When I talk (read bore) about Joni to people I can never quite explain how unusual I found the guitar. In the review I wrote when I was just 15 in 1970 and saw Joni live for the very first time, I said that I couldn't believe it possible that anyone could play and sing as the same time like Joni did! Some things never change! She used a lot of one finger stops, and a few favored easy shapes that she slides up and down the neck to make her progressions. Her right hand technique, by contrast, is not simplistic at all, employing a wonderful combination of finger picking, simultaneous string plucking, up brush strums and backbeat slaps. Her right hand position should be in a textbook for correct technique: the thumb extended outward, the wrist raised but cocked downwards so the fingers meet the strings square on without diagonal scraping. > > She leaves the top two strings open very often so the Dawntreader tuning in the new book that substitutes a second string G for A should be pretty easy to hear that its wrong. > > She also has long slender hands so she used her left hand thumb a lot for bass notes. Her single most used chord shape seems to be like a first position Emajor shape with the thumb over the top to play the F# bass (visualized in standard tuning). Personally I finger it differently, but there are many videos of her playing this shape this way. > > Dave ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Feb 2014 09:36:17 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Joni Covers Volume 182 Well, Bette did do a cover of "For Free" - not officially released but we've got it. She also did "Twisted", but, you know, not truly a Joni cover.
