When I read some of the posts about C&S having come out 40 years ago and who was in high school, etc., it occurred to me wouldn't it have been fun to all be a group then and have our instantaneous reactions to all the albums. My first reaction to C&S was shock. I could not understand why she was sliding up to all those notes. Then I listened to it about 10 more times and was completely bowled over by how brilliant it was That is always my process with Joni's music; it takes me several listens to be able to absorb it all. She much such huge musical strides with each album. Such a pioneer. I was just starting on my final year of teacher training when C&S came out. It was a radical departure and it took time to readjust. I think I shared your experience of several listens to get into it, but in those days I just remember taking the arm off the top of the record player and playing each side over and over again. I loved 'Trouble Child' very early on, though it sounded so weird with that delicious bass hook. Pioneer, indeed. Re: Joni, I noticed that Graham Nash, when interviewed by Terry Gross in November, didn't say anything about Joni - bet he got his hand slapped after writing about her - the whole "spanking" story that you all spoke of here - this is how I know about it, don't have his book but intend to get it. Neil not talking about Joni I'm sure was by design. She's very private and so is Neil, in his way. He'd rather talk about "ideas" than gossip. For sure he and Joni were deeply connected, we all know that. Leaving her out might have been out of respect for her privacy. Being her is not easy. We want to "know" her and yet, a lot of her life is simply none of our business and just because we choose "public" lives by being performing artists does not mean our private lives are up for grabs. Think about people like Robert Redford. He does a great job at staying out of the press unless he's promoting a project he is passionate about. This is also by design. I respect him for this. Especially when we have so many people "over-sharing" like all the reality stars and even the newer big artists and musicians. Nothing is sacred with social media and how much these folks seem to thrive on attention of any kind. Blah, blah, blah. I'm preaching to the choir here, I know. Back to Neil's book. Not the greatest piece of literature in the world but I'm grateful to have anything from him that he's willing to share. I'm fascinated by how his mind works and how he keeps his music pure -whether it's "good" or not. He's got his head into many different areas - not just music.
