Clearly if it has Joni references it is worth $7!!! :-) Susan Tierney McNamara email: sem8@cornell.edu - -----Original Message----- As for me, I noted in Neil Young's "Waging Heavy Peace" that he has an unreleased tape of a tipsy Joni Mitchell singing "Raised on Robbery" which he described as being a very sexy version - and that she won't allow the release. If Neil subscribes to this, I would say to him that I would pay to listen to that tape. It will be just between us. And perhaps a few JMDLers. Best wishes for 2014 to all. The book is on a list of recommended reading and I can get four hours of credit for it. Sheryl Sandberg is the COO of Facebook who believes that the women's movement has stalled when it comes to women leaders in the boardrooms of major companies. She sees this as the result of both internal and external perceptions of women in leadership roles. Anyway, here are a couple of quotes from the book that I found interesting. "Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to go through life without being labeled by my gender. I don't wake up thinking, 'What am I going to do today as Facebook's female COO?', but that's often how I'm referred to by others. When people talk about a female pilot, a female engineer, or a female race car driver, the word 'female' implies a bit of a surprise.... As Gloria Steinem observed, 'Whoever has power takes over the noun - and the norm - while the less powerful get an adjective.' Since no one wants to be perceived as less powerful, a lot of women reject the gender identification and insist, 'I don't see myself as a woman; I see myself as a novelist/athlete/professional/fill-in-the blank.' (my interjection - or singer/songwriter) They are right to do so. No one wants her achievements modified. We all just want to be the noun. Yet the world has a way of reminding women that they are women, and girls that they are girls." Later in the same chapter which is called 'Let's Start Talking About It' she says: "On one hand, I started a group to encourage more women to major in economics and government. On the other hand, I would have denied being in any way, shape, or form a feminist. None of my college friends thought of themselves as feminists either. It saddens me to admit that we did not see the backlash around us. We accepted the negative caricature of a bra-burning, humorless, man-hating feminist." Does that last sentence sound familiar? The only thing is that Sandberg is really a generation removed from Joni. Her belief during her college years was that the work of people like Gloria Steinem was done and that women had achieved the equality that Steinem and others had fought so hard for. But Sheryl Sandberg has found that this isn't true and that major changes need to happen for there to be true equality between the sexes. Maybe she should sit down with Joni and have a talk. That's a discussion I would like to see!
