I guess it's true because in my 20s I was an angry young man, and because little things like this bug me. But I have an alibi; I'm a nitpicker by trade because I'm a programmer. A CBC website purported to reveal 20 things about Joni at http://music.cbc.ca/#/genres/Singer-Songwriter/blogs/2013/11/Joni-Mitchell-at-70-20-things-you-didnt-know-about-one-of-Canadas-greatest-musicians Frame #12 said, >Mitchell got her name when she married Chuck Mitchell, a singer and cabaret performer from Detroit who was another regular on the Toronto folk circuit. They married in June, 1965, reportedly just 36 hours after they met. The pair moved to Detroit, where they often performed together.> I think I know the derivation of this incorrect passage. In Sheila Weller's book, "Girls Like Us", on p.210-11 of the paperback edition, she said >Chuck and Joni met in March 1965 at the Penny Farthing...> >Very soon after their meeting Joni took the train across the Canada-U.S. border; Chuck met her at the station and drove her to his home. He proposed within thirty-six hours. They fixed a June wedding, setting out for club engagements and to meet each other's parents in the interim.> According to Sheila, whom I've grown to respect as a researcher, not even the proposal came 36 hours after they met and the marriage was after that. It may have been a quick courtship, but it wasn't a Vega-crazy-drunken courtship. Sheila rocks; the CBC research does not. I DVRbd Tavis Smiley a couple of weeks ago because Robbie was his guest that night. I havenbt had a chance to watch in itbs entirety yet but I did note that it is about his new book and why some of the people profiled in it were selected. Ibll be interested to see whether he speaks about Joni since Tavis is a huge fan of hers and she has appeared on his show in a brilliant interview. Thanks for posting about this, Richard. I will post something after Ibve viewed this episode but in the mean time, here is a link to the interview online: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/tavissmiley/interviews/robbie-robertson/ Enjoy! On his page there are also links to his interviews with some other iconic artists: Graham Nash, Al Jarreau, Tower of Powerbs Stephen Kupka and Emilio Castillo, and Herb Alpert: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/tavissmiley/ I really admire Tavisb interviewing style. There is a chapter on Joni. http://www.amazon.com/Legends-Icons-Rebels-Music-Changed/dp/1770495711 Sounds like a good book. I just ordered it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2013 11:06:14 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: Laura Marling Well needless to say I really liked her set alot and she really was well received by the crowd in New Orleans. She arrived promptly at 5:30 on schedule in a Chevy SUV. She called me on my phone and announced her arrival and I went out and carried her guitars in as she is traveling with a Tour Manager or anything. I then set up her guitars and pedals etc. and adjusted her monitors. I used some new monitors I am beta testing for a company I work with and they sound amazing. When she came down to sound check I apparently set them perfectly because she did not ask for a single adjustment and said that they sounded "wicked". She broke a string tuning up one of her bizarre tunings and I promptly changed it. She reminded me a bit of Stryngs altho I like Stryngs more I found her very compelling and her songwriting style is quite different. I was going to talk to her about the Joni CD I saw in her case but then thought better of it. I asked her if there was anything special she wanted us to play as walk in music and she said it was up to me. So I played Jack Neilson in his entirety and then a few Joni Tunes and then some Shovels and Rope for the hour before the show and on the break between her and Willie Mason. It was a lovely evening of music at the Civic. Love Paz P.S. Anne, Willie is from Cape Cod area and plays around that part of the country alot. He has been on the road with Mumford and Sons and Magnetic Zeros. On Nov 10, 2013, at 7:15 AM, Anne Sandstrom wrote: OMG!!! You got to set up her guitars??? I don't know if they open the display up and change it from time to time, but the diary was open to Jimi's entry about the night he met Joni when I was there a couple of summers ago when my brother was in town. It seems that Jimi & Joni had an immediate liking for one another. Joni has always said that her impression was that Jimi was a gentle soul and that she sensed he was not entirely comfortable with public perception of him as a wild guitar god, setting fire to his instrument and smashing it on stage. It seems to me that Joni met a friend of spirit that night. I always thought so. As for this one: n 1967, Jimi Hendrix attended one of Mitchell's concerts at Le Hibou in Ottawa after playing a concert at the Capitol Theatre. With Mitchell's permission, Hendrix recorded her performance. Unfortunately, both Jimi's recorder and the tapes were stolen several days later. OK, 'fess up now. Who has Jimi's recorder and the tapes?
