And she will never be, although her artistic image and impact will never stop growing. Many of her fans come up with Hejira [1976] as their best album choice. I vote for the Hissing of Summer Lawns [1975], even though I change mind from time to time, as every album [including the live ones] especially up to 1982, is a jem for its own genuinity and quality. For the shake of a remark only [there is no such thing as a favorite JM song for me], for some time now I go for the rentition of Rainy Night House from Miles of Aisles. Joni Mitchell, being discerning, upfront, disengaged and calmly outspoken, has stirred controversy over various statements extracted out of context from interviews, to which she answers that she better be considered arrogant but sincere, than be a fake humble. Hey List, Below is my Facebook acknowledgement of this special day. Though not included below, it goes without saying that the experiences I've had with the JMDL -- the knowledge, the kindness, the fun and the music -- have been precious to me. This list (and Wally & Les's site) has introduced me to many talented and insightful friends, and helped me to understand the depth and breadth of Joni's work in a way that I never would have been able to otherwise. And though I've never been to a Jonifest, we've had some extraordinary times together face-to-face. Let me then also take today to thank all of you for the last fifteen years of camaraderie. Here's to many more! You are my friends of spirit, and you enrich my life greatly. Best, David _______________________________________________________ Birthday wishes today go out to Joni Mitchell, who is 70 today. Singular, brilliant, and necessary, no other artist has meant more to me over the course of my life than Joni. I have followed her for four decades now, coming in at Court and Spark, then absorbing the back catalogue in time to buy The Hissing of Summer Lawns on the day of release. I remember Al and me running down to his basement, removing the shrink-wrap, and dropping the needle on that revelation of an album. And the cover, and that dreamy Joni in the gatefold pool Joni, drawing in even my dear friend Neil, a die-hard ECM fan, with her magnificent The Dawntreader. Joni, for Fred's goodbye in Variety, "you leave 'em laughing when you go." Joni, for Sisotowbell Lane and The Urge for Going and so many moments with Michael. Spotting Joni at the Century City mall with my friend Jon and buying her earrings that she still wears to this day. Walking Joni to her car after the Billboard awards and talking with her about dancing. Singing along to Hits with Mayer en route to Big Sur. Ernest name-checking me in his Blood Beats -- "a defector from the petty wars." Endless back and forth with John Boskovich regarding the merits of Joni the jazz singer. Driving up the coast to Santa Barbara listening to Shine as the sun broke through those glorious clouds of Michelangelo. For forty years now there has always been Joni, in my blood like holy wine. Happy Birthday, Joni. My best to you. ______________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2013 23:33:11 -0800 (PST) From: carmel rotem Subject: Re: an article for Joni's 70th birthday in Israel. Hi Bob, I think the cover was recorded especially for the site for her birthday. you can find it in the article: http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-4450436,00.html the name of the singer in Moran Cohen Talmor and the guitarist name is Rami Yosifuv. googeling them I found another recording of this in bandcamp (which I like better): http://nuancelive1.bandcamp.com/track/help-me Carmel. I am grateful and stunned by what an excellent job you did for us all, Sue. I am moved beyond belief by all of the writings included. Thank you so much for this tremendous gift. I wish I could have seen the video but for some reason the link for the music box kept redirecting me to the knitting circle and no way to get back to the link :( Perhaps you could post it to Facebook? Anyway, You are a Joniangel. love, Cassy - -----Original Message----- From: Susan E. McNamara Sent: Tuesday, November 05, 2013 7:55 PM To: Joni Mitchell Subject: The Birthday Card is on its way ... Well it was like beat the clock all day today to try and get the birthday card in fed ex before 5:30. I actually had a hard time getting the paperwork done but the fed ex guy waited for me to fill everything out so that was nice. I put the birthday card and a 3-page flyer talking about Jonifest, Tributes and the web page in a blue fabric notebook. The cover of the notebook had a 5 in by 5 in cutout in it where you could put a picture, so I cut out the picture of Joni I put on the cover of the card and inserted it in the cutout. It looked pretty good. The card itself came out to 18 pages, with 100 signatures. I put headers on each page with a picture of Joni from different eras and lyrics to her songs. Then at the end of the card I had a three-page flyer describing the recent fests and tributes that the JMDL was involved with. I also gave a little update on the JM.com website. I saw this as kind of an annual report of what was happening with the community. Here are the links to the PDFs of the card and the fllyer. I apologize for any information you may have put in the tribute section of the survey that didn't make it into the flyer. The card itself came out so huge that I ran out of time (and brain matter, frankly). https://www.hightail.com/download/OGhlYnU5OW5qY3BsQXNUQw https://www.hightail.com/download/OGhlYnV6VEhTSUJnRXNUQw I also decided at the last minute to send Joni a gift. I've been thinking about sending this item to her for a long time, but I loved it so much I hated to part with it. It is a wooden music box I found on ebay that plays Both Sides Now. It has a carved yellow finch on the cover of the box which is pretty nice. I made a little video of it a couple of years ago. You can see it in the link below. http://cloudheights.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-favorite-christmas-present.html Thanks again to everyone who participated in this. I also have to say that I snagged some pictures from Jonifests without checking with everyone first, so if you see your picture in the flyer and you don't like it, tough noogies. :-) Now I'm going to go sleep for a week (oh shoot never mind I have to go to work tomorrow.) The statutory rates one pays via Harry Fox Agency when a song is recorded doesnt apply when a song is used with picture. Those are sync(ronization) rights and have to negotiated with the owner of the work or their representatives. I've been invited to perform at the Australian version of Woodstock. It's a massive music festival featuring 500 artists, set in the lush green rolling hills of south east Queensland (www.*woodfordfolkfestival*.com). It's a bloody hard festival to crack, so I'm REALLY happy! I have seven gigs including... wait for it... a Joni tribute concert gig! Here's the official blurb in the program: *LADIES OF THE CANYON CONCERT: **This year's Canadian imports - Rose Cousins, Kim Wempe and Mo Kenny, join forces with Australian favourites Leah Flanagan and Ange Takats and Scottish songstress Rachel Sermanni in a song circle that introduces their own work via a favourite work from the iconic Joni Mitchell.* I will be singing 'The Last Time I Saw Richard' - as well as two songs of my own. Anyone fancy a trip to Australia over Christmas/ New Year? If so, be sure to come to Woodford for some Joni-magic! He's a pretty good interviewer of artists. He interviewed Joni once & really got her to open up. That same period, Charlie Rose also interviewed Joni & that didn't go as well (understatement). There are so many recent YouTube videos to enjoy thanks to his channel. The Last Time I Saw Richard with Herbie Hancock in San Francisco was really interesting. I love, love, love those two together, but this song doesn't really work. The albums are so well produced that I find myself craving a bit of a train wreck: Herbie making unwise choices here, Joni going off key, forgetting the words, or dealing with rowdy audiences elsewhere. Many thanks are also owed to Sue for doing the birthday card, Bob for listening to 340+ Rivers and tolerating misunderstanding, Dave for deciphering some really complex music, Michael for arranging fests, and everyone else for participating in this group.
