These shows always seem to require a moment in the performance where the melody tripsidasically jumps all over the place and it always seems forced to me. But the crowd jumps for joy when they do it so I can see how they'd feel obligated. That's my only critique. He seemed to really feel the sadness of that song. But as Joni says, she always tried to add a touch of brightness along with the hard truth, the hopelessness, etc. The brightness of the dulcimer helped there. This one feels plain ol sad. Not that that's bad but I still prefer her version (OBVIOUSLY) Thanks for sharing! Gross overstatement. Herbie is still here. I work with Richie Bierach and of course he's a master -- and you, too. In fact, I was just gifted with one of your Joni records and love it. I was going to reach out to you (didn't know you were on this discussion board) as I just got it a couple weeks ago and have been taking in all the cool arrangements, instrumentation and playing. I'm talking about are the people that I came up with that I got to go hear regularly like Blakey, Horace Silver, Bill Evans, on and on and in particular on the vocal side, Billie, Carmen, Ella, Sarah, Abbey - all gone. (I never got to hear Billie!) Sheila Jordon is still with us, but you get the point - the "originators" of the music - the original group is small now. And, to go hear Chick or Keith or Herbie is not like it used to be either, it's VERY expensive. I pay attention to who is in town, and if one of the "original masters" is here I try to get (make) my students go hear them as we don't know when or if they will be in the Bay Area again. A contemporary vocal jazz master is Bobby McFerrin AND it's a big deal when he comes to town. We could go on and on - because there ARE contemporary masters, but, you know what I mean, David. We just lost Cedar. If I notice Billy Hart or Liebman is in town - I tell the vocal students to go hear them. Just to be around the vibe. To experience being around someone who has created jazz for 40 years or more. If you live in NY, you have more access to hear some of the people you mentioned. The way it is now, is that when the "original" or "contemporary" masters are in town, it's often at SFJAZZ where it can be quite expensive and often prevents students from going to hear them. This impacts the next generation. And they are in concert halls, not little clubs. I was fortunate to live in SF when the Keystone Korner was up and running and got to hear "everyone" - just about. Those impressions are still clear as day in my mind and ears and I truly believe that having the opportunity to hear those people *live* made all the difference. I hear the piano teachers complain that the young pianists "started" with Brad Mehldau, and on the vocal side, the singers "started" with Diana Krall, for instance. Anyway...this has now gone into a "NJC" conversation, perhaps, but, I did not mean in any way to disrespect those that are still with us, but, it's a smaller group now. That's all. Two female artists come to mind as relevant in 2013, M.I.A. will be coming out with a new album in December and Lissie just put out her new album a few days ago. (Her first was outstanding this one is good). Cat Empire's "Steal the Light" is by far the best album of 2013, a male group from Australia. There is great new music being created by musicians that are talented beyond belief and true to themselves. I think the best tribute we could give to Joni would be sharing among ourselves artists that are not imitators or tribute attention seekers, but artists who deserve buzz because they are creating music worth listening to. Getting caught up in Pop music bashing is demeaning to our intellects. If you love Joni's music (not just enamored with Blue and pre Don Juan's Reckless Daughter part of the catalogue) you have an intellect and ear that should live in the present as well as the past 500 years of multiple genres. Listen to KCRW on the web and stay open to today. Listening to new music is like panning for gold hard work for a few flecks worth keeping. but when you listen to an artist like M.I.A for the first time you understand why you put in the effort. Question because I don't know the answer. Has Joni ever given an opinion about Patti Smith? seems like she would acknowledge her existance at some point. Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour tonight if that applies to you, and why not use the extra hour to enjoy November's first installment of Joni Covers! I skipped all of October as I was on the road so it's catchup time again. I may migrate to doing these on Wednesdays so I don't miss any. The covers continue to come out fast and furious, and as Betsy said we are soon to be drowning in Rivers. Anyway, here's a great comeback edition, kicking off with a rarely-done cover of "Let The Wind Carry Me". Mostly new stuff, but some moldy oldies too like the great go-go version of Woodstock by The Berets and the franchise by Guerry Matthews. Some of you may remember Beverly McLellan from The Voice, she was the tatted bald lady that Christina Aguilera mentored in one of their early seasons. And if you only listen to one of these tracks, make it "Hejira" by Dirk Blanchart. Have you ever asked yourself "What if Simple Minds had recorded a Joni tribute in the 80's?" Of course you have, and now you have the answer. Brilliant stuff. No Katy covers yet, but I'm on the prowl. Git it: http://goo.gl/DYmQyf The roster: 1. Martha J. Quartet - Let The Wind Carry Me 2. Besides listening to Joni all day I'd go out every night no matter what shift I worked and would close down the local disco dancing around in my polyester attire amid the aroma of amyl nitrate called Poppers)...Thelma Houston, Donna Summers, Evelyn Champagne King, Rick James and even Grace Jones...so great, all of them! I had the great chance of meeting Grace after her 3-hr concert in Chicago when she invited us all to follow her to the Vortex bar (where the infamous serial killer/cannibal Geoffrey Dahmer later used to capture his meals and take them to WI) Grace was very tall and so beautiful like all her fashion mag covers and so very sweet to us all! She autographed my album covers before going back into her limo. ["Push Up to the Bumper"] The 1970s were SO cool in so many ways and so many musical genres. I also recall the Mill in Niles as I lived in the Chicago suburbs too, back then. Good mem'ries, thanks! LOL This is the first one you've put out that I've seen two performers in person. Michael Moore-Kelly lives in Ft. Myers, and has played at the club house in my neighborhood several times. Didn't play BSN, but a nice man and a good Pianist. I also got to see Beverly McClellan on a cruise a couple of years ago. Her voice is so wonderful, and she's really nice in person. Got to meet her after the show. As far as my favorite cover, it has to be Dirk Blanchard's "Hejira". I'm not really familiar with Simple Minds, but I thought of U2 covering this song. It's so totally different, but this Flemish singer is great! I just saw this and did not feel that James butchered the song. It was really a nice version except I guess time constraints made it necessary for him to leave out about 3/4 of the words. But all in all it was not bad at all. Is this the first time a singer has tackled one of Joni's songs on one of these singing competitions? I don't recall it on either 'The Voice' or 'American Idol'.
