That attitude led me to listen to this crazy record called Hejira back in 1976 and I'm still looking for something to top it. Haven't heard it yet but keeping my ears open. Two female artists come to mind as relevant in 2013, M.I.A. will be coming out with a new album in December and Lissie just put out her new album a few days ago. (Her first was outstanding this one is good). Cat Empire's "Steal the Light" is by far the best album of 2013, a male group from Australia. There is great new music being created by musicians that are talented beyond belief and true to themselves. I think the best tribute we could give to Joni would be sharing among ourselves artists that are not imitators or tribute attention seekers, but artists who deserve buzz because they are creating music worth listening to. Getting caught up in Pop music bashing is demeaning to our intellects. If you love Joni's music (not just enamored with Blue and pre Don Juan's Reckless Daughter part of the catalogue) you have an intellect and ear that should live in the present as well as the past 500 years of multiple genres. Listen to KCRW on the web and stay open to today. Listening to new music is like panning for gold hard work for a few flecks worth keeping. but when you listen to an artist like M.I.A for the first time you understand why you put in the effort. Question because I don't know the answer. Has Joni ever given an opinion about Patti Smith? seems like she would acknowledge her existance at some point. Thanks, Marc Fall in love with Cool Jazz if you haven't already Jazz was never meant to be Smooth. - ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2013 #1593 ****************************** - ------- To post messages to the list, sendtojoni@smoe.org. The newer people I love hearing in concert is Patti Hood (who sings like an angel and plays a huge harp which the famous Harpo Marx once played in one of his films with his brothers) and Raina Rose who hails from Austin, TX.. I tried sending one of my paintings of Joni but it doesn't seem to come through onto the site here. I also did one of Patti Smith too back when I was able to keep that up. Its great that Grace Slick also does great paintings like Joni. I'd been painting since 1973 but now the smell of any paint chews thru my brain like a buzzsaw. Joni should probably have her own art museum since she's done so many great works. Happy 70th, babe! You're still the best! As rock bios go, it was a great read. There is one part where he talks about being with Joni as guests for a dinner party at the home of June and Johnny Cash. Johnny announced that, in his home the tradition is to "sing for your supper", and the guitar is passed around amongst a stellar set of songwriters, Dylan, Joni, Nash... So about a week after reading this, I heard this song on the radio for the first time that Johnny Cash did about this night, called "Songs That Make a Difference" on the Highwaymen 2 album. Hey Babe, do you remember, back in 1969? We gathered round the room; you sang yours and I sang mine. We took turns with the guitar, in the front and centre seat. Shel and Kris and Dylan, and a couple off the street. Joni Mitchell cried on "Both Sides Now". We sang songs that made a difference and we can again somehow. Everybody knew that this was quite a special night. Graham Nash was nervous in the hot seat, in the light. Joe South was total magic, and we all walked in his shoes. Orbison and Rabbit cried and they rocked the country blues. New Berry, San Francisco, Maybelle, Joy. We sang songs that made a difference, June was pregnant with my boy. Oh, I could make a livin' drivin' nails or drivin' trucks. Sleep beneath the bridge or in the streets, down on my luck. I'd stand the cold and hunger if they'd let me hear the songs. Everybody write one that us bums can sing along. Keep it from the heart and down to earth: Sing the songs that make a difference, Give us all our money's worth. Hey, Keep it from the heart and down to earth: Sing the songs that make a difference, Give us all our money's worth. Maybe this is old news, but I didn't know about it RR From: "Lindsay Moon" > Finished Graham's book last night. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2013 #432 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here:mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe
