I think that it's a kind of new interest in her, much by the "baby boomer" generation. If it's a baby boomer musician, they, like me, have finally come around to acknowledging the important impact she has had on our musical lives. It's undeniable. She changed the world of music and musicians with her work. And now, there's a lot going on with regard to Joni. In the Bay Area, there was a beautiful production of "Blue" with a different artist doing one song each from the record. It was really incredible. My favorite was the Balkan Choir "Kitka" doing Blue - here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVqft_u3iYA one of the finest things I've ever heard. So of course I had to listen to it on my drive today and nearly lost it. There's a real sadness to those break-up songs. Anyway I was listening to the final song, and was really struck by the final lyrics: Strike every chord that you feel That broken trees And elephant ivories conceal What an amazing deconstruction of pianos that really illustrates how the production of something that can create such wonderful sounds, and the industry around it, can really be destructive, even murderous. So much in those few lines both visually and contextually. - -Corey ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2013 03:01:53 -0400 From: Sally Subject: Re: DJRD Hey Jim (and all), I'm not sure why or if DJRD is an outcast. I think that trilogy of records (HOSL/Hejira/DJRD) each stand alone but they also constitute a sort of whole...that flows together. The songs seem to build in complexity in a way, that sort of escalates and climaxes with DJRD. Don't you think that the structure of the songs becomes more complicated and maybe less accessible in some ways? Don't get me wrong because I've always picked Hejira as my favorite album but DJRD runs a very close second. I think if you compare any of the three to the previous record (Court&Spark) it's really apples and oranges. She seemed to say fuck it and went in a direction that pleased her at that point. I think she grew so much over the course of those records and it gave her the guts to make the Mingus record. I love DJRD! There are "tribute" shows and albums coming thick and fast to almost every major act from the 60s and 70s. In San Diego alone we have The Steely Damned, a Beatles band that performs entire albums with orchestra, a Pink Floyd band etc etc. We're a supposedly affluent demographic with ongoing fondness for the music of our youth, and it happens to be music that is reproduceable by a band. Once music became so programmed in the 80s it became much harder to pull off live. I don't agree with your timeline however. Herbie's Joni project was by no means the first. Bob Muller could give you accurate info, but from within the JMDL alone Big Yellow Taxi recorded three Joni covers CDs, David Lahm has made jazz piano arrangements of her music and Mutts of the Planet have been performing Joni music exclusively for the last 8 years. The TNT tribute extravaganza to her was from 2000.
