Didn't Chuck spank her, too? Is this how men treated their wives/partners back in the day, or is there something about Joni and her tantrums that made men feel as though she were a petulant child? I feel sure I have seen the exact address somewhere. Was it on this list? Or can anyone help him? He's been checking out the 1960s phone books in the Saskatoon Public Library, and so on. I directed him to the jmdl. Kate b?b 1b.b?b 1b.b?b 1b. There's one early, unreleased some where she set new words to Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne". It's interesting but I understand why she didn't release it. On the other hand, I had been buying her music for a long, long time before the jmdl was invented and I became aware of the collectors' trove, here. Soon, I heard "Fishbowl" and my appreciation got deeper. It's just one piece of her unreleased story and I'm really glad that I was trusted and welcomed into the collectors' community. As someone who has every live record, every studio album, and every compilation, I have a nearly limitless curiosity about Joni's muse. Bring it on. I was bothered by the cereal-bowl-dumping too, though, which isn't classy at all, but at least it doesn't hurt. Or shouldn't. Now I'm thinking of Joni singing, "'Kiss my ass', I said, and I threw my drink..." Maybe she has the habit of throwing things at people. I hate people who throw stuff at people, or who break things when they're angry. I've been tempted to do that too, but I don't. It'd make me feel like an idiot. And I wouldn't want to have to clean it up after, either. - ----- Original Message ----- > From: Anne Sandstrom > To: Catherine McKay ; Marian Russell ; "joni@smoe.org" > Cc: > Sent: Monday, September 16, 2013 10:09:18 AM > Subject: RE: Gossip from Graham Nash > > Yeah. I always assumed the wheel of fortune in Refuge of the Roads to be the metaphorical turn of fate, but I Wikipedia'd the famous U.S game show by that name and I'll be damned if it didn't first air in 1975, a few months before Hejira was written. And, as I recall, the gameshow wheel itself clicks just like crickets. Spectacular sound to image association. As usual there are new layers revealed almost every time you listen to Joni carefully. Here's an over-the-shoulder glance at a volume from days of yore, Volume 93. Been spinning it this AM and it's really nice. Plenty of fresh jazzy-sounding stuff, some tunes you don't hear very often, Carey sung in Norwegian, a cover by a Ho, and a tasty bit of cheese (that would be track 11). I went to great lengths to assemble it, for you it's just a click away. http://goo.gl/q8oMnL 1. Jodi Proznick Quartet - Help Me 2. Julie Kelly - Both Sides Now 3. Julie Kelly - Woodstock 4. All kidding aside, I appreciate your input to the discussion as an artist and as a songwriter. Having heard so many of these songs, as well as the songs she DID record, I agree with what you're saying somewhat. I think a bigger factor is that there's a greater attraction to the newer songs she had written versus the older ones she had been performing for a longer time. There was a freshness. To further your clothing analogy, when you buy a NEW outfit and get invited to a party, you're more inclined to wear the newer outfit over an older one, even if you look better in the older one. There's a sense of newness to wearing new clothes (this from a guy who updates his wardrobe less often than America updates Presidents). "Blue On Blue" is breath-takingly beautiful. "Just Like Me" could have been her biggest hit. What's remarkable is that with the exception of "Hunter" (which was very similar to "This Flight Tonight") there's not a lot of these melodies that trickled into other songs, at least not that I can hear.
