Love, Laura Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2013 02:10:33 -0700 From: Laurie Antonioli Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2013 #1265 Hi Everyone, As a jazz singer, it's common place, and expected to change the keys of "standards" to suit the singers' voice. The fact is, most Great American Songbook tunes where written by men and are often in "male" keys. As such, we change the keys to suit our particular range, expect to and don't feel the least bit guilty about it! Joni is our maker of great songs that fall into the category of the new "standards." As such, changing keys, something I do and even Joni has done in later years, does not take away from the composition in any way. You can do all her material in a key that is comfortable. Those early keys, for me, are remarkable - she was singing so high that it boggles the mind and few, very few, singers can perform in that range and actually sound "good." Even though I worship at the feet of our great lady, some of those high keys to me these days sound "too high" for my personal taste. The tunings can be brought down one or two steps. It's all relative and it's all legit in the scheme of things. The "cheater" way to transpose is easy: You want to go down 3 or 4 steps do this - set up with a transposition cheat sheet as follows, find your first note, find the note/key you want to go to and then make a half-step helper: Ab = F A = Gb Bb = G B = Ab C = A Db = Bb D = B Eb = C E = Db F = D Gb = Eb G = E Ab = F Just go up or down the scale in half steps, make your "chart" and then change the keys. Does this make sense? This little half step chart is something I show to students when transposing charts to double check their work. My personal fave is the jazzy instrumental take on "Rainy Night House" by The McCarron Brothers. Just when you think there's nothing new you can do with the franchise, Mishka Adams spins an original BSN take for you. A 10 minute + take on Twisted and a whole bunch of other River's. We are getting close to the time when more River's come our way. BYT and River keep jockeying for 2nd place, I predict that by January River will have a commanding lead. But what do I know? http://goo.gl/NXg6Qw The lineup: 1. Judy Marshak - River 2. The McCarron Brothers - Rainy Night House 3. Mishka Adams - Both Sides Now 4. Shannon Baker - - River 5. Orchard West - The Dawntreader 6. Something Extra - A Case Of You 7. Yamori - Both Sides Now 8. Edwina Hayes - River 9. Nancy King - Twisted 10. Laura Hatton - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat 11. Laura Hatton - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 12. David Moore - River 13. Kaitlyn Goldsmith - Both Sides Now 14. Meggan Leann - River 15. Anna Eszter Maitinsky - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines 16. Skye Edwards - River 17. The Wild Myrtles - Both Sides Now 17 songs, 17 hits! Enjoy. We also have one bed left at the main compound where all the jams and parties and community meals will happen. On Monday I will be doing my press release to get the word out about our Joni Tribute concert to benefit The Ruth Paz Hospital for Burns and Pediatric Surgery in Honduras. Below is some info for you about the history of PazFest. I hope to see more people get off the fence and come down to New Orleans and have a great weekend of music, food, friendship, and partying!!! I hosted a fundraiser for the Ruth Paz Foundation to build a Burn Hospital in Honduras in May of 2000. We had the concert at the Howlin Wolf in New Orleans and called it Pazfest-A New Orleans Tribute to Joni Mitchell. Artists included: David Lahm, Jason Marsalis Band, Susan Cowsill, Brian Stoltz, The Brian Thomas Band, Kim Carson w/ Bud Tower, Kim Prevost and Bill Solley, Jack Neilson, John Parker, Lil Queenie, John Rankin, Beth Patterson, Leslie Smith with Michael Pellera, Robert Mache, Candace Cox, Danzig and Wooley, Sam Price, Kevin Aucoin, Betsy McGovern and the Denise Marie Band. Over 400 people participated in a beautiful night of music at the Wolf and that show was released on CD in 2001. On August 15 of 2010 we opened doors to the Ruth Paz Hospital for Burns and Pediatric Surgery, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. I hosted Pazfest II on Labor Day weekend Sept 2-6, 2010. The main event was once again a tribute to Joni Mitchell concert that was held at the Howlin' Wolf. We were blessed again to have a stellar line up: Jimmy Robinson, Alexis Marceaux, Ingrid Lucia, Irvin Mayfield, Randy Jackson of Zebra, DJ G-Cue, Alex McMurray, Jonathan Freliech, Joe Cabral, Doug Harrison, Sharon Martin, Kristen Diable, Alexandra Scott, Ray Ganecheau, Christine Ohlman of Saturday Night Live Band, Roman Street, Phil Melancon, Pat Weathers, Leslie Smith with George Porter, Jr., Sharon Martin with Rickie Monie, Charie Gabriel and Joe Lastie of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and many more. We are doing it again on October 5, 2013 at the Howlin Wolf at 8pm. August 15 was the 3 year anniversary of the opening of the Hospital and we have been struggling to keep the doors open and the hospital services intact. A major benefactor has yet to help us with operational funds so we are forced to keep up the battle with friends like you. So far Amtrak, Rio Mar Restaurant, Astor Crown Plaza, Little Gem Saloon, The Calling Card, and Whole Foods are sponsors. And of course none of this would be possible without the gracious support of so many artists and friends like: Mutts of the Planet, Roland Guerin Band, Paul Sanchez, Gal Holiday, Jimmy Robinson, Charm Taylor with The Honorable South, Indianapolis Jazz Guitarist Bill Lancton with Lu Ann Lancton and special guest Johnny Vidacovich, Susan Cowsill, Leslie Smith, Jeff and Vida, Otra, Sam Price and Christina Friis-Nielson, Chris Atkins, Kevin Danzig, Faith Crawford, Roddie Romero, Sam Broussard and Caleb Elliott, New York Singer Songwriter Bryan Thomas, and many more. Sparkly seas of the integral D sound like mud flats when in B. And I can't imagine lowering the Bb bottom string of Black Crow without having a washing line as a string. I have played Black Crow up a couple of tones but it doesn't sound as dirty to my ears. I am not a music reader, only have very basic knowledge, so it is only how I feel about it. One thing I do know for sure is that Mr Blackburn playing Joni songs brilliantly in standard with the fab Robin Adler on vocals is always miraculous! The film shown by the BBC after the gas attacks were simply harrowing. I think it was an old British prime minister (Eden I think) who said we need "Jaw, jaw not war, war." If only people would talk. I simply know if I lived in Syria I would want help to stop the fighting and killing. The problem for us as we stand by helplessly watching is what intervention would really help. Personally, I don't think bombing will.
