Here's another NEW collection of Joni covers, Volume 172 - and it runs the gamut from breathtakingly lovely to hilariously awful, though thankfully the former outnumber the latter. A haunting and creative seven-and-a-half amazing version of "I Had A King" starts us up, we're treated to a mini-tribute by Fuori Battuta, and this volume also contains the utterly jaw-dropping take of "A Case Of You" by Anne Hampton-Callaway. As many times as this one has been covered, and as famous as Diana Krall's version has become, it's difficult to take the song and make it your own but Anne accomplishes just that. Unique vocal arrangement and a soaring clear voice, this one blows me away. And the fact that she's singing this live without a net makes it all the more incredible. This one all by itself is worth the download. Eden Rocs are from Greece. This LP was on my radar for years but was only available on ebay at a high price. When a reasonably-priced one popped up, I snagged it. In other bits of fun, you get to hear Des Moines pronounced as "Dess Moyness", which is, after all what it looks like. And see if you can make it all the way to the end of Gerry Welsh's version of the franchise. What makes it even funnier is that this was released as a single in 1972. At one point the rhythm section loses their place and is playing a different part of the song! Not just cheese - cheese with mold. http://goo.gl/796bxC 1. Efrat Alony - I Had A King 2. Loved the "haunting creative" version of "If I Had A King" from Efrat Alony. It was very different, and loved the Israeli jazz from this cover. Great piano from Elmer Gill from Elmer Gill. Nice job on BSN. I can see why he once played with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra. No need to say how good Ann Hampton-Calloway is so great. We all know that. Great job on ACOY. Good piano from Casella Studio for NRH. Couldn't find any info on the Internet, but one of my favorite songs. Jamie Jones, the country singer that was with Mulberry Lane did a nice job with ACOY. I agree with you on Gerry Welsh. The ultimate cheese, but I love the cheese :) One of my favorite's was Freddie White and Trish Hickey doing ACOY. Such a sweet acoustic guitar from Freddie, and a beautiful voice from Trish. Not a bad one in the bunch. I love this series of performances she did to promote Turbulent Indigo. It's her guitar playing at its peak before the VG8 moved in. Listening to the mutes, slaps and harmonics and even how she tunes and re-tunes the guitar ... all this stuff gets me giddy! :-) Susan Tierney McNamara email: sem8@cornell.edu - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Mark Sent: Thursday, August 01, 2013 10:32 PM To: simon@icu.com; joni@smoe.org Cc: Les Irvin; Laura Oppermann Subject: Re: Reprise Music Show - Wells Fargo Theater, Pt.2 This particular show has very special associations for me. Song For Sharon Originally scheduled as a 1-hr. Broadcast, the complete program actually ran 1-hr. 13-min. What IS interesting is Joni clearly thought she was off-the-air after JUST LIKE THIS TRAIN, until corrected. Certain FM stations actually broadcast a 1-hour version. Some left the satellite broadcast after 1-hr., others recorded the satellite feed and broadcast the program on Jan. 27th. I included this recording on TapeTree #6, available to JMDL members back in 1998. It was an Air-Check (Off-Air) recording from a broadcast by KCSA, FM-101.9, Glendale, CA. Shortly after the broadcast, Warner Bros. produced an 'In House' Promo CD. 100 Copies were produced from the Warner Bros. DAT Soundboard recording. These were not widely circulated, and were not available to the public. I rec'd several of these Promo CDs from different contacts at Warner/Reprise. Since it's a Direct Dub, from the Soundboard DAT recording, there's no FM compression. Many FM stations use extreme audio compression to keep the sound above the background noise for "distant" listeners, at the expense of degrading the sound quality. After the broadcast, I rec'd several Air-Check recordings from various collectors around the country. Each sounds different in one way or another. Of course some of this is due to collectors using different FM tuners, as well as each FM station using varying degrees of compression. It's really surprising how much compression some stations employ. - - - - - - - In any event, the Promo CD is the clearest, cleanest, best sounding recording of this concert. Unfortunately the Promo CD did not include FACE LIFT and SONG FOR SHARON. It's the 1-hour version. The Promo CD also included opening and closing comments. Dave Blackburn was kind enough to do a little assembly-editing. FACE LIFT and SONG FOR SHARON were added to the Promo CD version. The DJ Opening Introduction and Closing Comments were also included. - - - - - - - YouSendIt recently changed their name to Hightail. You can download The REPRISE MUSIC SHOW at the following URL: You'll be DownLoading an Archive.zip file titled "Reprise Music Show.zip" You'll find the Complete Concert as well as the SetList.pdf, and another pdf.file with a Promo AD and -2- reviews. Did he play trombone at that time? I think he was born (or spent a goodly time) in S. Africa. In 1967, I went several nights to hear Gary Burton's Quartet in NY; he had Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass and Roy Haynes then Bob Moses on drums. It was a wonderful band and Mike had contributed a piece (maybe more) to their book. My favorite was called "June 15th, 1967." If you give me his address, I'll send him my 2 CDs of JM songs.
