I have to agree that internet commenters are of the lowest variety, though I know it is true, I am still shocked at the level of vitriol and hatred and wild tangents any given subject, no matter how innocuous, raise such a tempest storm in (mostly - imo) right wing nuts who just love to spout off on anything. The level of hate & conjecture & jumping to opinions knows no bounds, it seems. Copy that for the Mitchell/Saskatoon kerfuffle. It troubles me somewhat & concerns me that as brilliant a lyricist as Joni can fall so flat when given to prose......perhaps she needs the structure of her expansive melodies & wonderful thoughts to be considered within a rhythmic structure, less free form than just talking & talking. Love her, though, warts & all. GREETINGS FROM THE TRIPLE M Down a gravel road, where the barb wire meets the sky. MARY M. MORRIS Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2013 10:17:40 -0700 From: anima_rising@yahoo.ca Subject: Re: Joni musings To: joni2city@hotmail.com; joni@smoe.org Joni probably needs a good PR person to keep her from shooting off at the mouth so often, and about the same old things, although I doubt she'd take anyone's advice anyway. It bothers me that she believes that "no one" understands her. Obviously some people would have to. She does, as someone said earlier, paint with too broad a brush. As far as the disparaging remarks about her, I think that most of the people who post comments on news sites tends to be the more extreme thinkers and reactors with very black-and-white views. I also read quite a few comments from people from Saskatoon who get what she's talking about and aren't hurt by it. Joni may be bitter, but I think a lot of people who comment on news websites must be even more bitter, since they seem to like sniping at everything they read. Likewise, Michael Coren of SunMedia (ptooey!) I hate that kind of hyperbole, whether it's from liberal (favourite word "neo-cons") or conservative (favourite words "libtards") wing-nuts, but I guess stirring up the shite sells papers and keeps viewers and listeners tuned in. I never could understand why people would want to listen to those talk-radio ranters, though. Why is their opinion any better than yours or mine? On the plus side, with the view that "there is no such thing as bad publicity", Coren gave her a whole 12-1/2 minutes. Joni apologized at Luminato for some of her earlier comments (for example. the one where she said that honour died in WWII - whatever she might have meant by that) and said that she seemed to be apologizing a lot lately. She also seemed genuinely pleased and impressed by the performances and by the audience's appreciation of her. And yet, once again, having apologized recently for that remark, she goes off on the "honour" thing again. I really don't see her apologizing for her comments, although it would be nice if she'd explain a bit better, without going off on some other tangent. As far as people not understanding her, I don't see how anyone could be expected to read between the lines and understand the points she was trying to make, even though it seems a few people did. There are many views of hers that just don't sound very reasoned & I have always taken them a grain of salt. Her stunning music & lyrics have always been how I appreciated her. That being said, her old complaint that she is misunderstood in interviews all these years is starting to ring not quite true - - she goes off at the mouth quite a bit & is quotable in & out of context because of it. She's a prickly person at times. Comes off bitter, too. When she sticks to her music, none can compare, however. The Canadian hatred of her & her Saskatoon comments is something I didn't understand. That there are some who jump to disparage her very nastily & boy, do they seem pissed, is a new insight. I don't have any knowledge of Canadian regional feelings, but it is an eye opener, for sure. Just put a nice little plaque at her old childhood home & leave it at that. We have her music. GREETINGS FROM THE TRIPLE M Down a gravel road, where the barb wire meets the sky. MARY M. I suppose that comes when a whole city feels personally attacked. If I were Joni (don't laugh), I'd be inclined to say I was sorry if I had hurt people living in Saskatoon today, but that was my experience of living there at that time. I might even want to say that I am pleased that my comments had cause such passionate defence and examination of Saskatoon. The refection augurs well. I think I'd also want to say that racism and bigotry still exist today and needs tackling wherever and whenever they arise. Now give me my stuff back! Anita On 27 Jul 2013, at 03:16, "Susan E.
