You scathe the wonder world and praise barbarity Sometimes it is spring, sometimes it is not anything Last chance lost in the tyranny of a long goodbye Send me somebody who's strong and somewhat sincere He was wearing his father's tie No one wants to warm themselves, sloughing off a coat ... Anyway, I always listen closely to see if a vocalist tweaks a lyric, changes words, genders, etc and such. In doing so, I often hear a lyric that strikes me, even the ones that sing the exact same words as Joni. The past 2-3 weeks the one that keeps going through my head is this one from "All I Want": "I want to be the one that you want to see" Now, I adore a lyric with unique words and images, such as "I crawl like a viper through these suburban streets, make love to these women, languid and bittersweet', and of course Joni has a plethora of them, most of "Furry" and the entire Hejira album in fact, but the brutal and honest simplicity of the above line really pulls me in. Because we've all been in that situation, maybe at a party or some gathering, and there are people there that you want to see, people that you're lukewarm about, and people that you DON'T want to see. I have people in all three categories and have also been in all three I'm sure. Being the person that "you want to see" is a special place to be. Joni captures that feeling perfectly with this line simply by stating the stark blunt truth. I suppose that's the beauty with most of Blue though, isn't it? My 2 cents on a Tuesday morning. I quite enjoyed that interview. A couple of the songs Chuck mentioned: 1.) Cheryl Wheeler "If it were up to me" - this one includes the lyrics - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op7agdIFOGY 2.) Fred Eaglesmith "Time to get a gun" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlEb3Zxhuwg >________________________________ > From: Anita >To: Les Irvin >Cc: Joni List >Sent: Monday, July 22, 2013 7:59:42 AM >Subject: Re: Chuck Mitchell interview > > >Fascinating, Les,thanks. I didn't know Chuck had been a military man in Korea. Not easy, I imagine. And he's a Trekkie! Who'd have thought it? And he plays a mean guitar - and I thought was most generous about Joni.
