I have been very pleased to be in touch with my dear brother, Michael (who introduced me to Joni in '68) about Luminato, and he has been been quite taken by it all and he has a vast and great taste. The rising six-note riff that recurs periodically seems to be just a cadence in the original but becomes musically crucial in the latest version. These are awesome. I might have to go out and find more Lizz Wright. Don't miss Rufus Wainright's funny story about not being allowed to listen to Joni as a kid, then how he and his husband were kept out until the wee hours Tuesday night (and she was probably being considerate, between her usual bedtime and the time zone change). It is a little more than 10 minutes into Esperanza's excellent BSN track. Great! Something positive to look forward to! A film called "A Case of You" with actress Kat Coiro (I have no idea who that is) is upcoming on IFC, the Independent Film Channel which I used to have but lost that and many more when trying to cut my satellite down from $100/mo. (As long as I have TCM, I'm fine). I wonder if the film will be playing that song of Joni's? If anybody sees it, can you let me know? Back to my killing fire ants inside my house here in the desert, coming in cracks of my house's foundation from an earlier earthquake....it will be cooling down to 100 degrees today I've heard--yea! It sure was a box full of chocolates. As always, you start off with a bang. Jean-Phillippe Guy & Lori Lorenzen did a FANTASITC job with "Down to You". Such great guitar playing, and Lori's voice were spectacular. Sporty Spice aka Melanie C. was terrific with BSN. Always liked the Spice Girls, but Melanie has the most pure voice of them all. The other BSN from Gregorian was fantastic as well. It was so similar to Joni when she toured with her orchestra. My other favorite was Kevin Fox. His cover of "River" was fantastic. He and his band from Cincy, are truly gifted. Thanks for all you do, Mr. Muller! Jimmy, a tired bowler in the singles and doubles today. I had a dream about Joni this morning .. a long and involved one where she wasn't famous. She wasn't a musician. She was a traveling philosopher crazy lady type who showed up at parties, set up a booth to sell magic potions and cures for things like 'energy loss'. One in particular that I recall was a big yellow Curry pill that helped with energy flow. The entire dream I wanted to speak to her about something important but either she or I would get distracted. She wasn't her lovely self. She was a sort of off-putting old lady with a cranky face. Man was I happy to wake up. Not that I'm suggesting, Sue, that there would EVER be part of you that would be rude, nor, Shari, could there possibly be part of you that could be 'a traveling philosopher crazy lady type who showed up at parties, set up a booth to sell magic potions and cures for things like 'energy loss'. My last dream about Joni was of her living in a house of straw with poo (poop I think you call it Stateside) on the floor. Taking my dream analogy, a kindly (or maybe not so kindly) JMDLer made the point that perhaps I was full of sh*t. Ouch. Well, it couldn't possibly be true, could it? :~)) Anita x On 10/07/2013, Susan E. McNamara wrote: > That's interesting Shari. This was a couple of months ago. And news on the Joni cover front...of course every week I throw a compilation out there for y'all (Something old, something new, something from Blue) but here's a new release from Madison, WI musician Traci Wundrock, "Sea Dreams: A Tribute to Joni Mitchell" that some of you will be interested in: http://tracywundrock.bandcamp.com/album/sea-dreams-a-tribute-to-joni-mitchell All old stuff, which is typical. I've been spinning it the past few days and her voice is very Kathleen Edwards'ish, the arrangements are all safe, duplicates of Joni's own recordings. There are a couple of rarely heard covers (Sisotowbell Lane, I Think I Understand). Sue, I wonder if she used the JM.com tabs? If you're interested in snagging a copy, it's easy to do and she'll ship it to you quickly.
