I always figured Joni was regurgitating some phraseology that came out of Furry during their brief meeting. Bob From: Catherine McKay To: Jonilist Date: 07/11/2013 08:58 AM Subject: Joni and Furry and "Rebel without a cause" Sent by: owner-joni@smoe.org I've been watching "The Sopranos" (ten years later). I've just finished watching an episode from Season 2, in which Christopher, Tony Soprano's nephew, is taking an acting class. He has chosen a scene from "Rebel without a cause." In this scene, I suddenly became aware of a line that Joni uses in "Furry sings the blues." Joni, as Furry, says, "Old Furry's got nobody - nobody!" We know that Joni is a fan of the film "Rebel without a cause". She uses scenes from it to begin the "Shadows and Light" film. Here's the script of a scene from Act III of "Rebel without a cause." Maybe this is where Joni got the "Old Furry's got nobody" line from. Jim (James Dean), Plato (Sal Mineo) and Judy are hiding at an abandoned mansion. Jim's parents and the police have arrived, looking for Jim and Plato. Plato has just been shot by the police. [OFFICER ONE and OFFICER TWO appear... with a stretcher, which they set in front of Plato.] JIM [looking down at PLATO]. He trusted me. FATHER: And you can depend on me, son. Trust me. Whatever comes, we'll face it together, I swear. [JIM puts his arms around his FATHER'S shoulder. FATHER looks at him and then puts his arm around JIM'S shoulder. MOTHER comes and stands besdie them. POLICE OFFICERS stand aside as MRS. DAVIS kneels by PLATO.] MRS. DAVIS [sobbing]. This poor baby got nobody. Just nobody. JIM. Sure he has. He's got us - he's got all of us.] Scene from "Rebel without a cause." (FYI, in this scene in the film, Jim is on the ground kneeling by Plato and grasps his father's legs, not his shoulders.) - ------------------------------------------------------------ The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material.
