More recently, she has been performing small gigs again. For anyone on Dimeadozen, one of these gigs (five songs only) has been uploaded there at http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=456314&viewcomm=6026285#comm6026285. This gig includes a cover of the ubiquitous "Big Yellow Taxi," which I've downloaded, converted to mp3 and sent to Mr Muller, our covers king. Interestingly, she also sings "The Dowie Dens of Yarrow," which Joni sang a capella at her Philadelphia Spectrum show in 1976. An article at www.frootsmag.com discusses what has been going on with Ms McDonald over the last 30-35 years and there is a wee Joni mention. Shelagh talks about her beginnings at trying to get gigs in London, and how listening to Joni Mitchell got her writing her own songs:B b[...]I decided things werenbt going so well, and there was a summer I worked in an art shop in Camden Town. Things stopped in the summer, the folk clubs closed and the colleges, and it was probably then I heard Joni Mitchell. I didnbt start writing until I heard Joni Mitchell, and I had the time on my hands then.b You can read the whole article here: http://www.frootsmag.com/content/features/shelagh-mcdonald/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2013 12:50:55 -0700 From: Betsy Blue Subject: Re: Subject: Re: Why Furry now? Piano-lesson quitter (or anything else Myrtle called her). Hippie goddess. Jazz wannabe. Old lady (age and promiscuity connotations). So many things...better to think of the few labels she's ok with: artist, rock&roll dancer, composer, punk, grandmother, citizen of the world. ... Or a feminist. Or a confessional poet. Or a female singer-songwriter. Or a former Canadian. Or a folksinger. Am I leaving anything out? LOL. I have been enjoying the many tangents that the Furry-thread has taken and thought I'd update the list to let you know that Joni's song was played on ABC Australia, across the state of Queensland this week during a 40 minute interview that I did for a segment titled 'Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". YAY for Joni-songs-on-Oz-radio! The segment features singer/songwriters and involves them to performing two songs (for 'something new' I performed my song 'Minnesota', from my new album Arva... for something 'borrowed' I performed a cover song of 'A Little Bit of Everything' by Taylor Goldsmith) and selecting two songs to be played (for 'something old' I chose Ella Fitzgerald's version of 'Bei Mir Bistu Shein', given my Jewish heritage ....and 'something blue' - you guessed it 'Furry Sings the Blues'!). I told the story of Joni giving her first public interview in many years - and the fact she'd mentioned how proud she was of the lyrics in that song. I spoke about old Furry and the decline of Beale Street and the fact that it was the song she chose to sing publicly in Canada at Luminato. It was a really nice interview... and I reckon some of the listeners would have never heard the song before...so I feel happy to have shared the Joni-love! Thanks to everyone for the links to articles and information.
