I read an interview with Furry, published in Playboy (April 1970) on jonimitchell.com this morning. In it, Furry calls out to his wife, Versie. I didn't catch the difference between the woman in Joni's song and the wife in his home. In the article, a neighbor is visiting Furry when the author arrives. Furry wasn't really alone. Although Joni might style herself as alone, I think maybe "closer to the truth to say" she's lonely. He has people in the sense that they're around but Furry was grumpy and guarded. Joan's take on it is that the whole scene has gone to hell .. only carrion and mercy that are left. She might not have created a documentary but more of a film. I saw Bette Midler in Oklahoma City in 1973 and Barry Manilow was her opening act. He was phenomenal and almost upstaged her, but not quite! She was awesome. I was addicted to her Divine Miss M album at the time.
