In a Thursday, June 27 Globe and Mail article by Brad Wheeler called "From tragedy to genius: Laura Marling's soundtrack of influence," Laura Marling names albums that influenced the making of her latest album, "Once I was an eagle." One of these influential albums is Joni's "Court and Spark." Here's the Joni part: 'Joni Mitchellbs Court and Spark (1974): bJoni is the foundation. She was the first person I ever listened to who really, really resonated with me. Since then, shebs been the go-to voice. Like her, I donbt play in standard guitar tunings. And I think her music resonates especially with females. She has a voice that hits women in the chest. Therebs an amicable vulnerability and strength at work.b' And here's the link: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/music/from-tragedy-to-genius-a-soundtrack-of-influence/article12875852/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 13:48:23 -0500 From: est86mlm@ameritech.net Subject: NEW Posted Video: 1968 Gift of Maggi +Juno Awards Check-out these recently posted videos! It's full of great images, like this one: "Dressed in a fantastic avant-garde nun's habit of dove grey with peaked shoulders, patched pockets and a full skirt, like the uniform of a high priestess from another, more tasteful planet, Joni had her long platinum locks piled on top of her head in the stylized pompadour of a Spanish queen under the influence of Elvis" >________________________________ > From: "TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com" >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Saturday, June 29, 2013 10:35:09 AM >Subject: =?UTF-8?Q?New_Library_item:_Joni_Mitchell=E2=80=99s_style_as_fe a?=o;?rless as her music in Luminato tribute concert > > >Title: Joni Mitchellbs style as fearless as her music in Luminato tribute concert >Publication: Toronto Star >Date: 2013.6.29 > >http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2618 > > >B B ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 13:40:45 +0000 From: Michael quebec Subject: RE: Shades of Lizz Wright Thanks for the cbc headsup Catherine ! and the photos : ) Michael Date: Sat, 29 Jun 2013 06:32:18 -0700 From: anima_rising@yahoo.ca Subject: Re: Shades of Lizz Wright To: michael_quebec@hotmail.com; joni@smoe.org I had tears in my eyes. What a wonderful treat that interview is in itself! Travis doesn't understand it but I could watch and listen to Joni talk for hours. I don't necessarily agree with everything she has to say but the woman has so much wisdom. A touch of blarney, maybe, but I think at this stage of her life the line from 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter could at least be amended to 'I come from open prairie given a lot of wisdom...'. I think I had read on the list that the lyrics she said she was so proud of were from 'Furry Sings the Blues' but the specific lyrics were not mentioned. But I knew immediately which words she was going to say and was saying them along with her as she spoke them. I think they are some of the greatest song lyrics I personally know (not that I know every song lyric that has ever been written). Those words not only paint wonderful pictures they also are amazing combinations of sounds, especially that first line. And the imagery is fantastic. If I had written those lines, I would certainly be proud of having done so. I don't think it's unreasonable that they may be, at the very least, among the lyrics Joni is most proud of. Love this bit: In BAM magazine, Blair Jackson's review of DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER said it was clear Mitchell's "singer-songwriter" reputation had become "shamefully inadequate": "we must add 'composer' and 'musician.'" (Incidentally, "composer" cannot accurately be used to describe either Cohen or Dylan.) Somebody out there besides us gets it.
