She is a grande dame and she has a great presence. Even the loss of much of her voice (she claims to have only four or five notes left, but I think it's a few more - maybe eight, heh heh) hasn't diminished her sense of drama and delivery. I will eventually get around to posting my own comments on the talk and the show. At this point I'm afraid I'm a bit too influenced by what others, both here and in the media, have already written about these events, but we are all in the same camp, so I guess that's not a bad thing. On that topic, I just want to share something with you: how a trollish commenter was smacked down by fans. In response to Richard Ouzounian's review of Tuesday night's show ("Joni Mitchell: Three words for Joni: astonishment, celebration and discovery" - http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/music/2013/06/19/joni_mitchell_three_wor ds_for_joni_astonishment_celebration_and_discovery_review.html I'm so please to see that a whole bunch of people, including yours truly, responded to someone who wrote a snarky comment on the article Here are the comments: JOHN CHUCKMAN: You [Richard O] astonish easily. Sorry, but she looks every day of her age, and then some. She has no voice left. Her day was forty years ago. She should have stayed retired. chillingirl: Chuckman I assume you were at the concert? As I was? Clearly, or you wouldn't be spouting. Perhaps you could sit down with a musician (a real one, might I suggest the world famous drummer who was the musical director of her show - Brian Blade, or similar?) and talk on the topic "what is music?". In that discussion, you might learn of one, maybe two, maybe 37 (give or take) defining features other than your insightful point on vocal range, and oh, what was it? Oh yes, physical appearance. Solice: You should have such a day, EVER. lol Jack Violet What have you accomplished lately? CatM: What she may have lost in terms of vocal range, and she freely admits that she has, she has gained in dramatic interpretation. She has managed to reinvent herself several times over during her career, a feat few of us are likely to accomplish. She is a multi-talented artist who deserves all the accolades that come her way. Solice: Yes, even when she was 50, her interpretive style had really benefited from years of living. She just gets better. lpkay: Oh you are harsh. This is a tribute concert, not her concert, a celebration! She still creates - ballet, poetry and yes, music. We are blessed to have her in our midst. Please write yourself off when you are 70. >________________________________ > From: Anita G >To: Catherine McKay >Cc: Bob Muller ; JMDL >Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2013 10:19:51 AM >Subject: Re: The Videos > > >Yes, Joni's style of delivering the songs reminded me of Tom Waits, >but also I could picture her reciting 'Show Me The Way to the Next >Whisky Bar' Brecht-Weill kind of thing. Lucky you to have seen both shows! It was a pleasure meeting you and Richard. Too bad we didn't have time to talk more. From previous experience with these shows, the one they broadcast will probably be interrupted by an annoying DJ/announcer and will be somewhat truncated. BUT, they will more than likely have all of the songs up on their website shortly after that, and these will be the full versions as they were live without any pointless patter (except for the on-stage patter). Those songs will stay there and people with the expertise to do this will most likely be able to rip them and, we hope, share them with us. >________________________________ > From: "johncalimee@frontier.com" >To: joni@smoe.org >Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2013 12:27:43 AM >Subject: More Luminous Joni. > > >Hi All, > >The second night of Joni's Birthday Portrait was even more amazing than the first.
