I have been thinking so much about Joni and our list as this Tribute has got closer and I have posted a great deal. Over the past years, we have kept going as a List through great admiration and love for Joni's music whilst she has been through great darkness and, from what it seems, near death. Until Ruby Lake and even more through reading about Luminato, I thought Joni might be indifferent to her fans and music. How wonderful it is to be completely wrong. The show was preceeded by an early dinner with about 20 jmdlrs and friends, such as Catherine, Rachel, Jody, Sue, Patti among others. There were several people whose names I didn,t get and we didn,t have a chanceto talk because of seating arrangements. Thankyou catherine for organizing this, it was a pleasure to meet Mathew and Sarah. The show was beyond my dreams and expectations. It opened with a mostly accapella rendition of FATD by Lizz Wright, who has the most gorgeous, silky alto voice and gracious stage presence. She sang barefoot throughout the evening. The stage was bare except for a large backdrop curtain which changed colours with projected lights. Two enormous chandeliers hung over either side of the stage. The hall was sold out, andhas two wrap aroundbalconies which end at the proscenium arch, a grand old hall with seats from the 1940,s! The band and the arrangements of the songs were absolutely amazing, so beautiful, top notch. Eight musicians on stage, including Brian Blade, Bill Frisell, plus, trumpet, sax, bass, piano, percussion. The evening, in two acts, comprised a total of 19 songs. I dont have the patienceto compose more detail onthis ipad, but sufficeto say there were severalmoving and brilliant highlights. Some of my personal faves were AIW, by Rufus Wainright, Carey by Glen hansard and Liam Titcomb, Everything sung by the luminous Lizz Wright, including Sosc, jericho. Glen Hhansard knocked the ball out ofthe park notably with Coyote, S& L and Boho. Katkleen Edwards gave beautiful performances of YTMOIAR, CBSASF, and a near acapella version of BYT which the audience sang along with her. cold Specks did a slampoetry type reading of Black Crow, which was unusual andvery original, while Liam Titcomb gave us a respectable version of IF. As promised, Joni was present, and aspromised, at the end of the show she did a reading of a songpoem about the painter Emily Carr getting rained out during her pleine air painting. Joni , wearing a matronly grey dress, was exuberant and in fine form and graciously thanked the band and performers for their outstanding contributions. But we weren,t prepared for Joni singing : Furry, followed by Dont Interupt, and a group rendition of Woodstock to close the show. her voicesounded pretty good, but her delivery was absolutely brilliant, at the top of her game. Just a brilliant evening all round. And at the end, I got the hall to sing Happy Birthday, twice to Joni. She is loved, loved indeed. i must say, I have never seen her more at ease, relaxed, andenjoying herself onstage. it was a great pleasure to behold. Michael in Quebec inToronto, signing out. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2013 00:56:47 -0700 From: kbhla@fastmail.fm Subject: Jean Grand-Maitre & Joni Mitchell hard at work That's funny, Steve - I *was* trying to figure out which restaurant on Sunset they were at from the photo ;-) Have a hunch it may have been one of those charming-cool little cafes around Sunset Plaza, near the border of Beverly Hills.
