It's his job is to keep things moving and focused. If he just let Joni tell stories for 100 minutes, it would have been interesting, of course, but I doubt a lot of what came out would have occurred to her to discuss. I think he made Joni feel at ease, she clearly sensed that he is not a "moron", and pushed her into some depth, taking her beyond her immediate answer. I'm completely satisfied, and it looked to me like Joni actually enjoyed the experience. Michael F. I couldn't access the Canadian Broadcast and went to bed, but have just got up and seen the clip. After which it's so great to read comments and other words of the JMDL, so many from people's hearts. All the positive comments about Jian seem true and we have all talked here about Joni's generosity and kindness. How good to see Jian reporting that, as well as saying not every story is a gem. Very human. I am very much looking forward to seeing or hearing more from you guys today. And that: 'In an exclusive print interview, the Star's Richard Ouzounian sits down with Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in her Bel Air home in advance of her appearance and tribute at the Luminato Festival. I listened to the entire broadcast this morning as I sat by my easel at work. I loved seeing how warm and cosy Joni's home is, and how she seems to be ageing so gracefully. I'm still so touched by her humour, her amazing self-awareness, and her vivacity. I've gone through the interview material a few times, and many things struck me, in no particular order: She's building a second house on her land in BC ? Her clear attachment to Canada, the land, and the friends of her past. Warren Beatty doesn't like the media either, for fear of being misconstrued. Funny she mentions Beatty still; I seem to remember his name associated with the song, People's Parties. We're all being driven mad by an electronic world of cellphones and satellites. Her most creative, playful childhood friends were gay guys. Her adamant defense of giving her daughter up for adoption for lack of resources, not because it could have hampered the development of her career. She's cursed by astrology to be deeper than the average person, and has a fundamental need to be different and original. If you listen to her music and see Joni the author, or Joni the celebrity, you're missing the point. Communicaton only happens when you see yourself in the music, and it touches you. This she believed was perhaps her greatest accomplishment, as she stated near the end. How she applied the vocabulary and techniques of painting and filmaking to the craft of songwriting. I thought it a shame to hear that she has lost the control of her voice, that her sinusses are damaged by disease (she says as she puffs away...) I loved the observation, (when the women aren't singing in the kitchen, you've got a sick nation.( That we're all on our own, let's face it; remove the crutches. How she beat the odds to stay alive, her tremendous lust for life, alternating with periodic irritability : ) I look forward to seeing the artistic choices in the new ballet. To Jian's credit, he never asked her anything inapproriate about her personal life, but I agree, at times he seemd a little impatient, but clearly he was enthralled and charmed by her. I think he asked some great questions and was generally very empathetic. I'm enjoying Joni's paintings more as I get older. I have just started to digest it . . . as I listened (underline "listened") to it today. I did not watch it, only listened so far. But . . . one thing that I noticed is the interviewer interrupted joni a lot and he tried to phrase things for her. I did not like his way of interviewing her. I personally would have liked it if he was more into listening. I sensed that joni was frustrated (not sure if that is the word) at times with his lead ins and his presuppositions . . . And he cut her of at times. I just do not think that she appreciated that he attempted to interpret the things she was saying. If you listen to her voice with out looking you might be able to pick up on it. Was the interview satisfying to her? I would think not. She was perhaps not understood as she could have been . . Joni was great, however. I did realize one great gift given us during this: Joni revealing her fascination with the creative processes of her artistic idols. How best to empathize with her most fervent fans who have sought glimpses into her process for decades. Her objectivity was on full display in this sit down. She was simultaneously self-effacing and self-assured, a delicate and articulate balance of poise and confidence. One of my favorite moments was her reference to how filmmaker Jean Renoir risked pissing off the bourgeoisie in his "The Rules of the Game." I agree with Kakki that Joni seems in a good place now. I may pine for the loss of her vocal instrument but she proves again and again that she has many other voices. And I'm glad it sounds like she's got some things left on the bucket list.
