When I read in L.A. magazine in around 1999 that Joni liked to hang out, and often sang at Les Deux Cafes, I checked it out right away and fell in love with the place. It instantly became a destination for local and visiting JMDLers ;-) While we never did catch Joni, I have so many great memories of going there and became a bit of a regular for a time. I remember asking the owner Michelle Lamy if it was really true that Joni sometimes sang there and she said in her French accent "Yes, yes, she zings here all the time!" Then she pointed out the Turbulent Indigo Joni/Vincent self portrait hanging prominently in the dining room. Lamy also let people smoke inside, which was against the law after 1997 ;-) It will always be one of my all time favorite places and I was so sad when it closed. I never knew until now that it became the genesis of a band with Klein and other great musicians!
