I wanted SO much to ask Ms. Mitchell when she was nearby in 29 Palms several years ago if she having a chelsea morning? But she was with her daughter then, having dinner at the Inn and about to explore our Joshua Tree National Park so didn't want to bug them. Its just so cool that she knows about this desert area where I live and am mesmerized by. May you all have chelsea mornings! Barbara of the SoCal desert In a message dated 4/27/2013 9:51:29 A.M. I'm a huge Pynchon fan, and love Gravity's Rainbow, but was unaware of any Joni connection. I love the fact that his first book was called V, and his second (major) book was about the V2, but called something else. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA FAR-West (Folk Alliance Region - West) tinkersown@ca.rr.com www.far-west.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2013 16:29:32 -0400 From: "Richard Flynn" Subject: RE: Question about Gravity's Rainbow Accidentally sent this just to Steve. Here's another site that has this story, but gets the song wrong: This is not the first time the 37th President has shown up in Pynchonbs fiction. In 1972, the writer selected a quote from Joni Mitchellbs song "The Circle Game" to use as the epigraph to the final section of Gravitybs Rainbow (at that stage still titled Mindless Pleasures). Reportedly, his publisher could not secure permission to use the quote (which appeared in the advance galleys of the book), so at the last minute Pynchon inserted instead the single word "What?" and attributed it to RN (who also appears in the last pages of that book under the name Richard M. Zhlubb). http://blog.nixonfoundation.org/2009/07/pynchon-in-nixonland/ See also: http://alturl.com/e4y7z - -----Original Message----- From: Richard Flynn [mailto:rflynn@frontiernet.net] Sent: Saturday, April 27, 2013 4:24 PM To: 'Steve Dulson' Subject: RE: Question about Gravity's Rainbow http://gravitys-rainbow.pynchonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Pages_617-626 bShe has brought them to her senses, They have laughed inside her laughter, Now she rallies her defenses, For she fears someone will ask her For eternity b And shebs so busy being freeb&.b b Joni Mitchell. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Steve Dulson Sent: Saturday, April 27, 2013 1:28 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: Question about Gravity's Rainbow > From: srobe444@aol.com > Subject: Question about Gravity's Rainbow > For those of you who have read Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, the fourth > part of the book begins with the epigram "What?", attributed to Richard Nixon. > > The early galleys, and in fact the advance reviewer copies, had a > quote from Joni Mitchell's Cactus Tree... > Anyway, can anyone shed further light on what the quote was or > anything else on Joni's brush with post-modernist literature? She is sensitive to having her interpretation altered or tainted or even enhanced by the opinion or insights of others. It takes something that was precious to her and alters it. Joni herself refrains from dissecting her lyrics so each person can have their own experience. I'm not choosing a side by chiming in. Just playing the devil's advocate. When I catch a glimpse of an email with EGG in the body I just delete it. I think it's fun you guys talk your nonsense and then perhaps stumble on some clever amusing or even genius bit of wisdom through it.
