San Diego Reader - Robert Bush, March 28, 2013 "We're looking forward to presenting a newly learned suite of Joni music on April 6, and have been spending the last few months in preparation so we can honor it properly," says Mutts of the Planet guitarist Dave Blackburn, "It is certainly challenging music and is un-fakeable". Mutts of the Planet is the exceptional repertory group led by songbird Robin Adler and Blackburn, devoted to the music of Joni Mitchell. The personnel varies according to what period of Mitchell's career they are interpreting, this time it is the pre-Court & Spark era--namely Song to a Seagull, Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon and For The Roses--and will feature Barnaby Finch on piano, Peggy Watson on vocals/guitar, Barry Cahill on vocals/saxophone/flute, and Danny Campbell on drums. All of this will be going down at the New Dizzy's in Pacific Beach at 8 pm. Tickets are $20. I have seen Mutts of the Planet several times in recent years and have been floored by their aesthetic every time. Mitchell's music is the product of a visionary-- a genius of the highest order, and what this band does with that music is nothing short of amazing. "Her first three albums will provide the tunes for our first set, including the chilling a capella commentary on US militarism, The Fiddle and the Drum and the modal austerity of her first recording of Woodstock," Blackburn said. "The second set will be a complete performance of For The Roses, an emotionally dark and very transitional record that saw a massive leap in her compositional sophistication from Blue." These Joni Mitchell tributes always seem to draw huge crowds, so reservations are definitely recommended. McNamara" Subject: RE: FOR THE ROSES LIVE 8pm Sat April 6th, Dizzy's San Diego CA This sounds like a magnificent evening. Good luck to Robin, Dave and the Mutts, I'm sure it will be standing room only. I think, which will sound obvious to everyone on this list, that a Joni Mitchell fan is not ambivalent about the music, and when musicians stretch to perform her work, people come out of the woodwork to watch. After 8 years of 4 standing room only open mics, and 4 full length sold-out evenings at the Community Music center here in Ithaca, it is clear to me that not only are Joni fans attentive and appreciative, they are of very high-calibre in taste and smarts. :-) I applaud all the hard work Dave and Robin put into these events ... and I just have to say again Dave, that every piano player at the Joni Mitchell Tribute here in Ithaca was reading your sheets when they were playing. Some of the piano songs included Tea Leaf Prophecy, Willie, My Old Man, See You Sometime, and Blue. I wish I could ride my magic carpet and be there next Friday!!! Good luck!
