I've said it before and I'll repeat myself: whatever anyone's opinion of the book, I can personally attest to the fact that Sheila strove for accuracy in every detail, and backed up her sources (yes, even the very few anonymous ones) six ways to Sunday. She also paid great attention to any proven errors of fact, no matter how relatively slight (for instance, the mileage between Canadian cities and the US border-- *;-) *--which I personally re-verified and helped to fix for the paperback). I think Sheila Weller is a terrific and compelling writer and have no doubt that everything was thoroughly researched. I recall a long section in the back of source cites for all the outside information. My problem is with the ex-lovers and ex husbands who so freely told tales and shared initmate, personal information which is now forever memoralized in print. Many of those tales gave me no further insight into Joni at all and seemed gratuitous- just reading her lyrics all these years told me she has been through a lot of stuff. I guess in a way the book shows that some of her ex's were probably not the best characters and don't value loyalty or respect so much. I may be wrong but recall reading that neither Joni nor Carole provided input for the book. If Joni herself wanted to share the stories, that is fine, but without her input or side to the story, it seems unfair and intrusive. Part of my reaction comes from having met and talked with one of the ex's during a break at one of his shows in a small club. His insulting and dismissive comments about Joni to me were shocking. Saw another one of the ex's make some disrepsectful cracks about her at another show. Both these ex's were the ones so ready to tell the tales in the book. Graham always seems to be the only one who is a true gentleman and loyal friend. Maybe James Taylor, too. "They'll hurt you, and desert you, they'll take your soul if you let them." At this point in time I have a pretty impressive Joni library, both in terms of books and media. When the book went out of print, the price skyrocketed and as you say it has come back to earth a bit.
