And yet, we KNOW this kind of thing was going on all over the place, not just in Ireland. >________________________________ > From: Kate Johnson >To: Mary Morris >Cc: jmdl >Sent: Thursday, February 7, 2013 3:04:57 PM >Subject: Re: Joni posts > >On 2013-02-07, at 12:08 PM, Mary Morris wrote: > >> Magdeline Laundries ( made me almost cry ) >> > > > >The other night on CBC Radio's program "As It Happens," where they interview >people by telephone all over the world, a guest was a woman who had been >imprisoned in the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland. They're not new artists, just new for me. Lynn Miles: Although she is by no means on Joni's level, she has some chords/harmonies that remind me of Joni sometimes. And she also shares an affinity for long car trips that trigger her writing. Sam Roberts: more rock with a twist. When i think of other canadian artists on the scene, such as Bruce Cockburn, L. Cohen, Blue Rodeo, i just reflect on the refreshing originality of the canadian sound. Just my 2 cents. It was supposedly written by Joni as a response or tribute to Cohen's Suzanne. The melody is very similar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOFAr5OoDWM From: owner-joni-digest@smoe.org (JMDL Digest) To: joni-digest@smoe.org Date: 02/07/2013 12:19 PM Subject: JMDL Digest V2013 #203 Sent by: owner-joni-digest@smoe.org JMDL Digest Thursday, February 7 2013 Volume 2013 : Number 203 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - -------- Met author of Leonard Cohen biography [hejira924@aol.com] - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 7 Feb 2013 11:56:01 -0500 (EST) From: hejira924@aol.com Subject: Met author of Leonard Cohen biography I heard Sylvie Simmons last night in NYC and had her sign a copy of her book I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen. This is a must-read for lovers of Joni's early songs, specifically those written about the short-lived but highly influential love affair between these seminal singer-songwriters: "That Song About the Midway," "Rainy Night House," "The Priest," "Chelsea Morning," "The Gallery," and "A Case of You." Do yourself a favor and buy the book, but for any cheaters out there, go to a bookstore and read pages 173-175 to place these Joni songs in this context. The author also mentions a song Joni wrote about Leonard titled "The Wizard of Is" - has anybody ever heard this unreleased song or know where we can find the lyrics? Please, I am counting on one of you Joniphiles to let me know more if you do. We are now done and doing final proof reading. Some, like Let the Wind Carry Me, are monsters, and we have written out all vocal and woodwind parts as well as piano. The published songbooks for this album are laughably incorrect and we took on the job of presenting the correct unabridged scores for this lovely album. Part of the motivation came from the fact that the Mutts are to perform the whole of FTR on April 6th in San Diego (wanna come? - you really should!) and intend to do it right. A couple of piano pieces from Blue and LOTC remain to be charted but as far as the 70s albums are concerned we're close to having the project wrapped up. The published version of Paprika Plains is very good so we'll probably leave that one. As we complete them I upload them to the piano transcription database so put your 2.5x reading glasses on, remember which clef is which, be prepared to count odd meter bars and dive in to the wonderful piano pieces Joni wrote.
