It has this in-your-face production value. She had written songs like bCloudsb where she had harpsichord on it and all these strings and all that but this album was devoid of all instruments bar the dulcimer, the acoustic guitar and the piano. I donbt even recall a lot of bass on the album but Stephen Stills might have played a bass line on an acoustic guitar. So what you have is ten or twelve knockout songs that she must have spent months crafting. Poetically, these songs are perfect. They speak to women, I know, but they also speak to men as well, about universal and personal challenges we all face in life. Joni Mitchell articulated them so well but as a record producer, how she did it was so important. Again, itbs that dry sound; in-your-face and a kind of minimal recording but every note and every instrument stated something very clearly and very powerfully. There are times when I hear this and I donbt even realise that Ibm hearing a piano or a vocal; to me, it sounds orchestral. A good arrangement can make two or three instruments sound huge and a bad arrangement can make a whole orchestra sound puny. These top three albums in my list were valuable lessons. Clearly, I was working on something similar sonically and of course that was Tyrannosaurus Rex. For economic reasons, Marc Bolan could only afford an acoustic guitar and his partner was a bongo drum player. It wasnbt far removed from Blue. I didnbt succeed on the first Tyrannosaurus Rex record, My People Were Fairb& because I didnbt know anything yet, I was still learning, but by their second album, Prophets, Seers & Sages: The Angel Of The Ages, I got that dry sound and because I only had two musicians I knew I had to make every noise count. So thatbs what I got from Joni. We are now done and doing final proof reading. Some, like Let the Wind Carry Me, are monsters, and we have written out all vocal and woodwind parts as well as piano. The published songbooks for this album are laughably incorrect and we took on the job of presenting the correct unabridged scores for this lovely album. The "Talk" was at the Saban Theater which I'd never heard of, looked old and very ornate, very nice venue with a big bar in the middle of the lobby. Two low chairs placed on a stage. Both Judy and Stephen looked great. Judy looks like a dancer with her thin frame and pretty legs in leggings and high-heeled black suede boots no less! And that pretty crown of white hair now. Stephen looked kind of fidgety and he later complained that those were the worst chairs ever. Before long, two guys came out with higher chairs with more support and he said, "This is the best present I've ever gotten!" He also took a hearing aid out of his ear at one point early and said, "Can't anyone make a decent hearing aid?" I didn't know he had any hearing problems but he seemed to struggle through the talk saying he couldn't hear and the sound was bouncing all around the venue. (I looked up some more info on him and he's said publicly he's lost a lot of his hearing). He kept looking at Judy saying, "Translation?" Poor guy, I felt bad for him because that must be very uncomfortable when she's looking at you for a response and you couldn't hear. He did seem to have some physical discomfort, I don't know whether arthritis or what. He made reference to trying to impress Judy in Colorado long ago with his skiing prowess and blew out both his knees which he's lived with all this time. He later remarked his shoulder was giving him trouble. Seemed a little creaky getting up (aren't we all?) Lots of old stories about where they played in New York in the Village, how Simon & Garfunkel were around the corner in another venue, Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens, etc. Judy said she used to sit at the bar with a seedy looking guy she felt kind of sorry for who it turned out was Bob Dylan. Haha. Stephen told the story of having most of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" written and a lot of material which he hastily laid down in a recording studio just to make sure he got it on tape. The tapes disappeared for 40+ years and is now available on Rhino as "Just Roll Tape." He was selling the upcoming "Carry On" due out in March and she was selling her book "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes." They did sing sort of at the end. Stephen got his guitar, they chatted for a minute, and then tried one song,"The Last Thing on My Mind," harmonizing. I'd call it a bit rough and they might have rehearsed it. They sang one verse and couldn't remember any more. Haha. We waited for autographs and I will say I was disappointed that when we finally got up to them, they were distracted talking to someone at the side about going out to dinner. Both Steve and I said to them several times "Thank you so much for doing this, it was great," and we never got one iota of a thank-you or even met our eyes. Hmm. Really enjoyable night and I think a great idea for "aging" artists, especially those so important to that period of music. Thank you to Steve Dulson, my charming chauffeur and companion! So sorry Kakki & Roch couldn't make it. They would have loved it! It contained a lot of tidbits I've gathered over the years of Joni-watching and elaborated on them & expanded my understanding of her. I always took her at face value, but going back to revisit her work has deepened my appreciation of it. She really is quite a woman. On previous albums like "Clouds" and "Blue" she had played piano and guitar, certainly appropriate for her folk roots. But for this album Mitchell brought in Tom Scott's jazz-rock band the L.A. But notice how the title song opens the album with just the sound of a piano, making the listener think this is still the "old" Mitchell. Of course, "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris" are the best-known tracks (I consider the latter the quintessential Joni Mitchell song), representing the fact that Mitchell's romantic side tended to be more popular than her quirky fun side (although who can forget "Twisted" once they hear it?). The final pair of lines of the chorus from "Help Me"--"We love our lovin'/But not like we love our freedom"--may well be the most insightful into Mitchell's work. Maybe it is because I have been looking over sonnet forms lately, but it suddenly strikes me that Mitchell is one of the premier writers of couplets in American music. Think about it: "We are stardust we are golden/And we've got to get ourselves back to the garden"; "They paved paradise/Put up a parking lot"; "Stoking the star maker machinery/Behind the popular song"; "I wish I was a river/I could sail away on." Mitchell is a singer/songwriter's singer/songwriter. This is why there are so many covers of songs like "River" and why David Crosby, Graham Nash, Robbie Robertson, Jose Feliciano, and even Cheech & Chong show up for this one.
