At the recent Screen Actors Guild awards, Tina Fey in accepting her award said she wanted to thank Amy Poehler, her longtime friend and said, "I knew you when you were pregnant with Lena Dunham!" Anyway, just got my copy of Entertainment Weekly (2/8 issue) with Lena on the cover (mind you, I've never seen her show "Girls" because we don't have HBO). On "My Must List" for Lena there's the Music Current and Music All-Time of which she says: "I got into Joni Mitchell via my mother. It's such beautiful emotional music, and she's funny and she's sad and it's sexy. She's like the kind of female characters that I like to write. There's a lot of ambiguity and complexity there." Thank you, Lena! Between you and Robin Adler & Dave Blackburn performances, we will continue to get the word out!! Thanks Dave - I knew you would have much wisdom to add to the conversation. I'll toss in another nugget - When Joni participated in the "My Top 12" BBC show, she picked "Gaucho" as one of her songs, and did the same on her Starbucks release of songs that influenced her. And yeah, now I can definitely hear them doing justice to Edith as well as most of those HOSL songs - Don't Interrupt The Sorrow is even chock full of some of the cryptic lyrical imagery that they insert into their own songs. As for Wayne Shorter, I don't know about that. She was a Miles Davis fan and would possibly have heard Wayne's work with Miles in the 60s. I'm not sure how early she became a Miles fan though. The moment she met Jaco, sometime in '76, he would have been talking her up to the rest of his new band Weather Report, of which Wayne of course was the co-leader. That may have been when they first met. Wayne didn't recorded with Steely Dan until 1978 a year after he had already played on DJRD. I imagine Joni's meeting Jaco led to interest in her music by Wayne and Herbie Hancock and of course we know that Charles Mingus liked what he heard on DJRD and called her to collaborate. By 1979 her jazz cred was well established enough for Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays and Michael Brecker to consider going on the road with her- pretty amazing considering their own careers were in top gear at that point. Just think of Fagen's voice (at least his former voice - it's pretty shot now) singing "he tilts their tired faces gently to the spoon." Add to that the fact that, in the mid 70s, Joni and SD were using a lot of the same musicians: Larry Carlton, Victor Feldman, Tom Scott, Chuck Findley, and Wilton Felder, off the top of my head. So even their records sounded similar. And, as I have written before, there is even a specific chord, called the Major 9 (no 3rd) ex. G with a C bass, that Joni more or less pioneered in pop/rock music and it became a staple of Fagen and Becker's writing a couple of years later. I can well imagine them as fans of Joni's and being heavily influenced by her harmonic and lyrical innovations. What they brought to the table was an R&B funk bed that Joni didn't exploit much, although the L.A Express sort of funkified a few things on their own - Love or Money, for example. I remember reading somewhere that Joni admired Steely Dan's music too, so it was rather a mutual admiration society. > > This is a good thread to pursue as there are lots of overlaps between the two artists. > > Dave > > > On Feb 1, 2013, at 7:36 AM, Bob.Muller@Fluor.com wrote: > > I dunno, I've tried to hear The Dan doing Carey and have never been able to wrap my head around it, musically or lyrically.
