The recently discontinued 4-CD GEFFEN Box Set contained 3-songs not available elsewhere. 1. Two Grey Rooms (unfinished demo version) 2. Good Friends (Demo) 3. It doesn't surprise me that they didn't include the following: 4. I had my first ever dream featuring Joni. It was quite bizarre. I dreamed that Joni's career had turned bad and she had resorted to becoming a game show host. There was no story to the dream. I just had a vision of Joni, grossly overweight, putting on a fake bubbly smile and hosting a talk show cum game show. She was running into the audience, trying to get them excited about the upcoming segment. She was wearing a horrible kaftan and sandals. Her hair was loosely tied in a bun and she was overly tanned. It was like a cross between Oprah and The Price Is Right. Joni looked so pathetic. I don't know where this came from. I hadn't even been thinking of Joni before I went to bed that night. The scene lasted only for a minute and consisted of just Joni running into the audience and back with a big cheesy grin and false enthusiasm, trying to encourage the audience to get excited and she was about to start the next segment and it ended. The way I have been taught to work with dreams is to start to look at each part of the dream as one's self, especially if there's a particular image (no matter how bizarre) you are drawn to. I want to emphasise that this would be a starting point and maybe completely wrong! Dreams can work in so many ways, but here are my thoughts. It seems that this image of Joni is important to in this dream. Mark, you could ask yourself things like "How am I like this Joni?" Perhaps you might feel like you are in a bit of a game show in part of your life, or having to wear a false smile, trying to get people excited about something inconsequential. You also describe the dream Joni as looking pathetic. How you feel about that patheticness (if there is such a word) maybe significant. Do you feel sad or angry with this pathetic Joni? It also sounds like this Joni (this maybe more about me than you) is inauthentic, resorting to being a tanned and unattractive game show host in some kind of desperation? It may reflect a real concern about Joni, but again I imagine it to be a point at which you 'meet' with Joni with your unconscious throwing a dream at you to tell you something about yourself and what's going on in your life at the moment. I love working out my dreams, but the knack is to establish what the images are for you and they will be unique to you, though some may also resonate in the collective unconscious. Dream books telling you what this or that means are hopeless. My dreams are often full of jokes and puns and can be very funny. Maybe you have a strong association or views about kaftans and sandals? Well done, David. I've never had a Joni dream. Most of my dreams, at least those that I can remember, are anxiety dreams (trying to get somewhere, but can't, because of obstacles, and then there was the one I used to have about not being able to walk, or my teeth falling out, or some kind of monster or monstrous person trying to catch me.) I did have a pun dream once, years ago, that I still remember, because it was just so stupid. Someone brought me a silver platter with a cover on it. When I removed the cover, there was a hand on it. I shall go and check it out. I often feel that Joni appears in my dreams when I need some wisdom, so I reckon that's how, most times, my unconscious throws her into my dreams. That woman's lyrics are full of wisdom and heart, as we all know. Personally, I was blessed to work with another very wise woman, Helen McClean, who authored a book called the 'Dream Catchers Handbook, Learn to Understand the Personal Significance of Your Dream' which is still available, and it really is a brilliant way to understand all that our dreams offer us. And what would life be like without a level of admiration for Joni? Well, of course, that won't ever happen. I shall be grateful for the music of Joni Mitchell until my dying breath! Does 'Joni' show you different things when you have the dream, or are you shown the same things each time? My most recent dream about Joni was also at her house, which was beautifully decorated with fabulous objects throughout, which I was telling her I really admired, but I felt very strange when I noticed that the floor was covered in straw. Joni was completely unperturbed by this, although in the dream it certainly bothered me. When I later looked more closely at my dream, I became aware of a person who had been overly flattering me about something I had done and about whom I felt very uncomfortable. The things this person said were over the top and did not sound real. I thought Joni probably has to contend with phony people in her life, whose flattery was insincere. The words Joni quoted in 'If' (about walking with Kings yet not losing the common touch) also seemed important. I combined this with my admiration for Joni's ordinariness when I have met her. My Joni dream worked for me on so many levels, but I came to think that it's okay to have simple flooring even if your walls are covered with artefacts, (which folk may well flatter and be drawn to) and not to let it bother you!
