It's been interesting to make the recent Buffy Saint Marie connection (just who DID influence Joni's sound?). At the time of my first hearing of Joni's music, I was listening to Debussy and Satie and the nearest I could hear to Joni seemed more like them than other women singers (Joan Baez) who I heard at the time. I remember in particular the odd way Joni used such leaps in her voice - - the chorus in 'Night In The City' for example, the really orchestral (to my ears at the time) guitar parts e.g. Sistotowbell Lane and the Dawntreader - where the guitar had such complexity and beauty that was so much more that the strumming guitar parts that seemed so much more common at the time. I hear Joni's influence all the time these days. More recently, Ray La Montagne sounded right out of the Joni school of singer songwriting. But yeah - not many reach her level Anita x ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2012 16:36:55 -0800 From: Shari Eaton Subject: Urge for Going Another Mon Pays, Mes Chansons TV series showing of Joni singing "Urge for Going". She sings (or mimes as Anita pointed out) an additional verse about geese. No idea why she took that verse out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzmSjEYBKHc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2012 16:48:47 -0800 From: Shari Eaton Subject: three more Sorry if I'd seen these before I'd have sent them together. These are kind of surreal in a way. I remember reading about this session a long time ago. She said she had had quite a hard time filming that day because of the cows but I don't recall the details.
