I love this exercise! And I found your illustration of song choices with your favorite lines, enlightening. You and I had some common track choices between us and it interested me the lines that moved you most, especially when I pondered what my favorite lines are. Lol! In many cases I truly have a hard time even singling out specific lines. In the case of "Sweet Bird", this is never more true. Taken as a whole, for me that track is almost like an out of body experience. I find that sometimes when I listen to it, it's as if I don't actually hear it...rather I understand the complete truth in it. It's very moving for me...even hundreds of plays later. I think it's nearly impossible to pick one singular representative track out of the body of work of any musician. but for me in this case it is most certainly "Sweet Bird". I was glad to see that it made your list also, albeit at the end! ;D Your other choices were wonderful as well! When I constructed my own list, I agonized over cutting some of the ones you left on. In particular "Judgement of the Moon & the Stars" and "The Arrangement" have been longtime essential listens for me. It was hard to leave "Edith" behind as well. Great list, thanks for sharing that! Then I thought about Mingus and Paprika Plains and figured I would just extend and extend. What I did was choose subconsciously -- listened while I was working and when my ears perked up I took note. It made the exercise feel fair. I'm putting together a YouTube channel of these so I can share with others who may not listen to her. I've always been shy about my love of Joni but I'm getting over it talking to you guys! Sweet bird -- when I looked back at the list I thought it was on there and nearly gasped -- and so it was the last one. I considered re-ordering but felt I'd subjected myself to enough Sophie's Choice for the day : D. Sweet Bird is one track that I feel anyone could listen to and say 'undeniable.
