There are many Joni lyrics that are sometimes difficult to understand, but they always make sense. >________________________________ > From: Shari Eaton >To: Gary Hanick >Cc: "" >Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2012 9:51:20 PM >Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2012 #1674 > >You can see right away the writer doesn't 'get' Joni with the comment: > >"(her) lyrics didn't have to make sense". > >Critics are the bane of culture, IMO. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2012 14:30:15 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Retro Covers, Volume 74 I love the Steve Klink cover of "Ray's Dad's Cadillac." Critics are the bane of culture, IMO." I read the reviews, and found then to be pretty strong. Yes, the reviewer may not have the full-blooded hero-worship of the average JMDL'er, but clearly places Joni at or near the very top of the music world's artists. At least, for this box-set's period. It does appear, from her closing remarks, that the reviewer does not "get" the virtues of Mingu or some of Joni's post-70's work. I tend to agree that Joni is poor company on DED and CMIARS, and I am not a big fan of Mingus, TTT or Shine. But it was/is wrong IMO to be dismissive of WTRF, NRH and TI. Perhaps the reviewer had lost patience at those points. However, the line Shari quotes is unfairly out of context. The reviewer was saying that her music was so good that her lyrics didn't even have to make sense - but they did, and struck a deep chord, especially, with women. That's double praise, really. Some might argue that, say, Cat Stevens's songs were so catchy that the lyrics didn't have to make sense - and, in fact, they didn't. But that was not what this critic was saying about Joni. So much for instant gratification. They have a couple of his other albums. On the other hand, Mia Z has a version of "Comes love" on an album she did with Steve called "Hold my hand." Most of her other albums are in Slovenian. I see that Mia and Steve covered "Little Green" on Joni covers 36! She sounds a bit like Holly Cole. >________________________________ > From: Bob Muller >To: Catherine McKay ; JMDL >Sent: Sunday, November 11, 2012 9:20:20 AM >Subject: Re: Retro Covers, Volume 74 > >I love the Steve Klink cover of "Ray's Dad's Cadillac."
