Obviously not someone who knows her music at all! That's a poor excuse for a list. Frankly, I respect all the music joni has done but I lean toward those "middle records"! My top ten (through gritted teeth desperately trying not to look back on all the great tracks I left out): 10) I Had a King 9) Hejira 8) Amelia 7) California 6) Cherokee Louise 5) DJRD 4) Furry Sings the Blues 3) For the Roses 2) Refuge of the Roads 1) Sweet Bird That was a gut wrenching exercise, trying to eliminate tracks that I love down to only the ten best. Some thoughts: - -I took "I had a King" because the musical arrangement is amazing but her voice!!! Sublime! - -Everything from Hejira...frankly I think was divinely inspired. The writing is Joan at her very best. She gets me with the travel imagery...particularly the white flags of winter chimneys waving truce against the moon. And the photograph of the earth taken coming back from the moon that can be found on the highway service station calendar! The visual nature of the lyrics on this record I think far surpass most anything she had written up to that point. It's tiny little paintings inside of bigger paintings, inside ones head! Amazing! - -I recently revisited the "Furry" track. I find it not only amusing but deep. I think it's not only a fine song but a great example of phrasing and the meshing of lyrics and music...she's masterful at this and it's a lesson in how to do it. "Ol Furry ain't got noooooobody"!!!! - -DJRD ...what can be said? This one is rambling, epic and gnarly. A real commentary on the times and the nature of love and the romantic battleground! She's pissed, and the thing crawls along and seems to draw structure from the words! It rocks like crazy! YeeeHaaaaa!!! - -For the Roses...that was a tough call for me! So many great tracks on that record but it came down to one thing...any song that has the line, "it was just the arbutus rustling" in it, has to make my list. - - Cherokee Louise I selected because (as folks recently mentioned here), it's an upbeat tune about a difficult subject. We hear it, we are pained but hopeful in the way abused children are. - -Finally the masterpiece that is Sweet Bird. This song finds its way into your guts. I think it is a song about THE most significant thing...truth! It is a definitive statement in the simplest of terms with guitar playing to match the concept. Simply beautiful... Happy Birthday Joni! And thank you for the most memorable tunes of my lifetime. In fifty years of engaged listening, I have heard nothing that begins to equal your brilliance! Quite simply...you are...
