Having read this new article Les posted: > Title: THE FLOWERING OF JONI MITCHELL > Publication: Telegraph > Date: 1991.2.23 > > http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2535 > I couldn't help noticing it includes another telling of the awakening of the character Art Noveau, to become an important persona in Joni's career. This is how it's told in this article: "She told me a story which was very revealing, about how she had been walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day, looking for a costume to wear to a Halloween party, 'when all of a sudden this black kid goes by with a New York walk you know, the diddybop, with one leg shorter than the other and the hand curled back and as he passed by he turned and gave me this most radiant grin and said, "Lookin' good, sister, lookin' good"' the mimicry is perfect 'And he gave me a grin, and it was such a genuine, sweet smile; it woke up the spirit in me. 'I began walking behind him, imitating his walk; he just took me into this very fun-loving mood, and he caught me at it, and laughed. So I thought, I know...I'm going to this party not as him, but as his spirit.' Outfitted with a blue polyester suit, a phallus-shaped cocaine-spoon, an Afro wig and copious amounts of Lena Horne pancake, Joni Mitchell thus embarked on a short, but apparently riotously eventful career at parties and social functions as a black man." I don't remember reading the tale quite like this before, however, my memory ain't that great these days, Happy Sunday Wotsmyname. Ps I do hope all my friends (and everyone else) are doing okay with the storm hitting you guys on the east coast. Keep safe and warm! I am just spending a narcissistic Sunday reading through some bits I sent to joni.com and I was re-reading the earliest piece which was 'Concerts Attended' which was my sweet little review of my first Joni gig in January 1970. I was surprised by this: "The second half opened with "Marcie"; the real Marcie was in the audience followed by "Nathan La Franeer". She then sang two more songs on the piano; one called "Two Houses" and the new Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young single "Woodstock". Does anybody recall or know anything about 'Two Houses'? I wondered if I'd got a bit confused with something, there were a lot of new songs at that time. Maybe I got the name of the song wrong or was it a song that Joni discarded or renamed. Any ideas anyone? The full article (including my ticket stub) if anyone wants to get in touch with my inner adolescent is at: http://jonimitchell.com/chronology/detail.cfm?id=1288 But I'd welcome anyone who recalls or knows or had ideas about 'Two Houses' from them ol' days Anita ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2012 15:21:06 -0400 From: "Gary Z." Subject: Re: Anyone know a Joni song 'Two Houses'? Hi Anita, The first Joni concert I attended was in 1969 and she also performed two songs she called "A Tale of Two Houses." It was "Rainy Night House" that went directly into "Blue Boy." I remember her doing "Marcie" and "Nathan LaFraneer" the same way and her mentioning that she liked putting these two sets of songs together as one. Take care! Gary Z. Les' "News" section announced it clear back in May. Is there a way to search the jmdl archives? I want to do a little research of my own.
