I've always liked The Windfall, musically and lyrically, and my enjoyment was only slightly spoiled by finding out the origin of the song, which is probably what puts a lot of people off-- rich people moralising about the greed of their employees is never attractive... But I think the song transcends the pettiness of its origins, as an attack on our over-litigous society. When NRH first came out, I thought the first side was the one of the strongest run of songs Joni had ever released, and it's still well up there in my top Joni (not so Side 2...). I want to love Sex Kills, but the first verse gets in the way-- why mention ice to then totally drop the analogy and move on? (How is ice 'governed by greed and lust'?). I've always found that sloppy, very untypical of Joni, though the next two verses are much stronger. More 'late' songs that rank with the best, in my opinion: the lovely mature romance of 'Love puts on a new face', and also the meditation on masculinity in 'No apologies'-- sure, the second verse is weak compared to the other two, but the move from political/current affairs to pettily personal to philosophical is masterful, and even a tiny phrase like 'the trampled moon' says so much about the 'male' urge to conquer nature, and its destructive effects. Greetings to all Michel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Oct 2012 22:18:48 -0700 From: "Cassy" Subject: My Adventure on the Sunshine Coast Where to begin? I guess at the beginning when I first saw that Joni was going to do a special appearance at Ruby Lake. I dreamed of going but didnbt want to go by myself then I got an email from Laura asking if she could get a ride with me, at that point I didnbt hesitate to fill out the reservation form and send it in. I hadnbt heard back from Ruby Lake the next morning so I phoned and booked two tickets, however, their rooms were already sold out. Ruby Lake suggested another location for accommodations and I booked a room at a nearby facility: The Stonewater Motel. As it turned out, Laura had already purchased her ticket so I ended up with an extra and posted it to the JMDL. Pearl wrote me on Wednesday night and asked if I still had it so I wrote back and said yes, let me know what you want to do. On Thursday she decided to join us and Ibll let her tell you about the trials she went through to meet us in Seattle. On Friday Laura and Pearl arrived within 2 minutes of each other at the Seattle airport it was a great start to our trip. Ibd forgotten my camera and since I only live a minute off I-5 we stopped to get it and we decided to make lunch to carry with us. Technically webre criminals for taking grapes across the border but Laura had a bit more of an adventure crossing the border... she got her camera confiscated while the border agent deleted photos from it and then it was returned to her. We missed The Ferry carrying Anita, Steph, Phyliss & Bob to the Sunshine Coast but we got the next one and were able to hook up with them for dinner at Ruby Lake. It was serendipitous that we met there because the waitress told us seating was assigned for Jonibs dinner and a movie and we were able to arrange to be seated together the following evening in a premium location. Pearl, Laura and I met Phyllis and Bob for breakfast on Saturday. The local golf course had been suggested and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We then headed off to do a little shopping. Madeira Park and Pendour Harbour are well known for their art galleries and there is actually a map tour of some of the best ones to visit... more on that later. We readied ourselves and headed over to Ruby Lake Resort. We met up with everyone to make luminaries b Georgio had requested them so we could make the amphitheater glow with ambience. Phyliss & Bob, both of whom are extremely talented artists in their own right, made some really stunning pieces and Laura made the cut out JMDL set. Mine were a little less successful! I am not exactly an artist... not exactly! Laura entertained us under the Off to dinner we went after a while and were seated at our table. We had chatted with several of the locals while waiting in line and the atmosphere in our dining area was electric. We had been told that Joni would not arrive until everyone was seated and the buffet would probably have begun. We were in the line to make up our plates when a commotion began. Joni had arrived her dog had leaped out of her arms and was chasing the free-range chickens that abounded... then people began chasing the dog and it reminded me of a really noisy movie scene... people chasing dog chasing chickens; it was a hoot! I took a few moments after Ibd eaten to go and snap some photos of Joni. When I saw she was not too busy and that not many people were surrounding her I went back to the table and picked up my life mask to take to her. Giorgio began sending people away so that Joni could eat her meal but I continued to stand my ground, he took a look at what I was holding and said bIs that Joni?b I told him thatbs what I was trying to find out and laughed. He said bOK, hang tight a minute.b Then it was happening! He brought me forward and I said bIbd like to ask you a question about this mask, if you have a moment?b She took it from me and began looking it over as I said that there was a myth surrounding her having done a sitting for a life mask and that it had disappeared while being delivered to her and I wondered whether this could be the one in question. She laughed and said she absolutely had done a sitting for life masks with some friends who were doing it for a blind school for children so they could practice touching faces with them. She began looking at it in more detail and we chatted while she turned it over in her hands. She remembered that the masks were originally white but that it had obviously been colored later and she could tell where it had been slightly broken making it smaller but she was happy to say it was the mask and asked me if I bgot soakedb for it. We both laughed and they brought her meal so I excused myself to let her eat in peace. I floated back to my seat. After enough time had passed for her to have eaten her meal I went back to be within her aura. I brought a gift for her and waited my turn to give it to her. Laura was right next to me and agreed to take a photo for me on my camera. The gift was an evening bag made out of pop tops crocheted together. I had seen her hand off other gifts without looking at them to someone to store for her until later so I just said I brought you a gift but Ibm going to open it for you. I opened it and handed it to her and said bKnowing how you feel about ecology I thought this would be really appropriate. Itbs an evening bag made from recycled pop tops and itbs the perfect size for an I.D. a pack of smokes and a lighter if you donbt want to carry a larger bag.b She was delighted with it and immediately hung it on her wrist and twirled it around. She kept exclaiming that it was perfect and so elegant. She said bIt feels like Christmas!b I saw her much later on still showing it off to people and it tickled me to have selected something she liked so much. I had taken three books with me for potential autographing: my first edition hardback of The Complete Poems & Lyrics; The hardback book from the Mendel Art Exhibit and my copy of "Secret Gardens of Hollywood: And Other Private Oases in Los Angeles." Joni chose the item she wanted to sign for me, she chose my first-edition hardback copy of The Complete Poems and Lyrics. She said "Oh what's that?" pointing to the garden book and I said "this?" and handed it to her she said "Yes, I've never seen that!" I said breally?b She looked through the pages of her garden and began telling the other ladies at her table about the people who came to photograph her garden and then said again bbut Ibve never actually seen it before.b I asked if she would like to keep it and she said "Can you get another one?" I said "I can" so she said she'd love to have it. I gave it to her to keep. She then went on to sign another autograph for me inside the Mendel Book. I moved along and it was Laurabs turn! I took a photo of her with Joni then left them alone to chat. Shortly afterwards it was time to head over to the amphitheater. I felt badly because at that point Pearl had been bshut outb from meeting Joni twice, she had been next in line both times they shut down the reception line and it was so disheartening for her. We all headed up to the amphitheater. I had brought folding chairs for our group and Phyliss and I had set them up earlier in the day. Laura discovered where Joni was to be seated and we moved our chairs over to that area. We were so close we could hear the stories she was telling; Pearl and Bob ended up sitting beside her sofa. Oh... the sofa... bThe Buffalo Couchb as it was called. Joni told a story about the couch as they brought it in and she was seated in it. The couch was one that had been at her house. When she and bher boyfriend Donald broke up she hated the sight of the couch because she could only picture him lounging on it and she decided shebd be happier without it, she gave it to Giorgio to use at his resort. It was carried up to the amphitheater for her to sit on during the movie. She laughed as she told the story and appeared almost giddy with happiness. The movie began. She sang along to only one of the songs as it played bThe Crazy Cries of Love.b I took a short stroll to get a drink and ran into the woman who had been beside her most of the evening (I have no clue who she was) who happened to be handling Jonibs dog. I asked the name of the dog and was told her name was bBella Lugosi.b I mentioned to her that I had been saddened to hear that Coco was no longer with Joni and she said bWell, this dog is no Coco... more like Psycho!b We both laughed. I took an opportunity to chat with Craig Mutch. He was the official photographer for the evening and webd had a moment earlier that night. I ended up buying him a glass of wine and we spent quite a bit of time chatting and bonding. I look forward to meeting him again some time in the future. I went back to my seat and watched the end of the film. Giorgio came to Joni after the film and thanked her for being gracious enough to share the evening with us all. He also presented her with a house-warming gift; a huge wooden carved Buddha, it was beautiful. She currently has a home under construction on the Sunshine Coast. More on that later too. We all went down to the stage to have a group photo taken by Craig. The whole audience crowded around Joni and we got rowdy for the photo! After the group shot Pearl finally got to meet up with Joni. Unfortunately some VERY rude people that had already had time with Joni interrupted her and though we got some lovely candid photos she did not get the posed shot with Joni that would have bmadeb her night. We headed back to Anita and Stephbs and had our little mini-fest with Laura and Anita both playing the guitar for us to sing along with. I have really loved hearing your experiences and details and found myself even misty eyed a couple times reading. It all sounds maginificent and I am thrilled Joni gave you all such quality time with her. Absolutely fantastic and I'm sure Joni herself was so happy to meet so many friends who came from all over to bring their love to her. As far as Joni's aging, I also think that she needs to undo the updo but also know that she is much more beautiful and vibrant in person than is shown in photos/videos. I was so disappointed that i could not view your photos on the other link. I think the photos are wonderful. As others have pointed out Joni does seem to have aged quite a bit and i don't think the hairstyle helps. However she looked in good spirits on the night. Thanks for sharing. Mr. Bubble! It used to come in a box in powdered form. It's probably a liquid now. I'm pretty sure at least the liquid Mr. Bubble is still made. I'm not sure when it will be done, but there are a few videos on youtube in the meantime. That's all a work in progress too...
